So how does the Wanderers fit in the whole El Hazard plot line? I haven't seen it (I've seen the OAV's and the Alternate World) and from reading some reviews it seemed to be a bit different or at least out of sorts.
Any thoughts?
Oh and are they going to continue the El Hazard timeline (ie post Alternate World)?

Why didn't anyone respond?
Wanderers is the best El Hazard series. The OAVs are beautiful and the story may be a little darker, but the TV series is just a masterpiece. It's a retelling of the OAVs with some variations. You may or may not appreciate the series because of THE most obvious variation: Ifurita, a serious a passionate Goddess-like robot, becomes a dim-witted, but kind and compassionate, servant-like robot in Wanderers. She acts a little like Mihoshi in Tenchi, which is hilarious.
In general, if Ifurita was your favorite character in the OAVs, then you will hate Wanderers. If not, then you will love Wanderers.
Apart from Ifurita's transformation, you also get Rune Venus' transformation. She and Makoto develop their affection and love throughout the series. She also looks very different and she actually has a role in the story.
The fact is, this series gives us what we all wanted and needed: character development. Ever wondered who actually IS Afura? Almost all characters get a lot of development (Afura, Miz, Shayla, Nanami, Jinnai, Rune, among others), while some characters get less development(Makoto, Fujisawa, Alielle) and Fatora is completely absent from the story!
Anyway, I personally consider Wanderers actually *above* the OAVs. You get a very good story, lots of character development and great humour. There is less romance, though, as it is mainly focused on Makoto and Rune. If you liked the OAVs, you will love Wanderers, but if you praised Ifurita as El Hazard's best character, you might not like it so much. My advice is: Get it!
In terms of enjoyment, here is my El Hazard top 4:
1. Wanderers (best)
2. Magnificent World (great)
3. Alternative World (good)
4. OAV 2 (average)

My only thoughts to why there were no replies is:
El Hazard gets no love on these boards.
And unfortunately I think, given comments I've seen, Dual is more popular here than El Hazard.

A pity. El Hazard was the series that brought me back into anime after more than 10 years of absence. Anyway, as I see it, most people here are eva followers who can't get enough of it. Oh, btw, no offense to anyone.

That said, is there an ETA for the Wanderers DVD release?

the only thing I know is that Pioneer has the intention of eventually releasing all their series on DVD, so it should come. Unfortunately, I have no idea when.. :(
btw, I agree with Deadpepper, The Wanderers is a great series. Although, I preferer the first OAV (because I love Ifurita), its still a must see for any anime fan!

No, I don't like what they did to Ifurita in the TV series. I'm sorry, but the heart and soul of the OAV was the relationship between Ifurita and Makoto. Also, the absence of Fatora means no cross-dressing and no Phantom Tribe. Not to mention switching Alielle's motivations slightly... I can't claim it was vital to the story, but some of those scenes in the OAV were hilarious. Finally, if they had to remove Ifurita as the romantic interest, I would have much rather had Nanami or Shayla-Shayla in her place.
Sounds like it's a case of meatier story (OAV), vs. better character development (The Wanderers). It's an old problem; the OAV is too short for really good character development, but stretch it out and you risk diluting the plot, as well as the pitfall of filler episodes... I'll still buy it, though. After watching the OAV, I want more!

I totally agree with Dryden-san. That said, why can't fans get the best of both worlds where anime studios stop making all these parallel or alternate plot lines and concentrate on developing and completing good storylines (like Tenchi, El Hazard, etc).
Can I get a "what what!"
Just saw on animeondvd that volumes 1 and 2 have been scheduled for release on october 30th and november 16th :)
I too agree with Dryden. That's why I like both of them.

Got bored, looked for some el Hazard stuff...
I really like all of it.
My view is that the Wanderers is a less naughty verson of the OVAs with a more traditional romance.
The end of the last OVA has a special bonus extra naughty episode for those who like that sort of thing.
Don't know why people ignore it so much on these boards.

I wonder why they made that last episode. It really doesn't fit in with the rest of the episodes AND the 3 other series.
Why didn't they make a hentai El-Hazard series instead and keep El-Hazard itself "pure", if you know what I mean?

that episode i think was mostly a fan-service episode, since the past episodes of AW are mostly based on the plot and kinda serious.
el-hazard isnt exactly 'pure', they already had many fan-service episodes, like the one in the ova (they were in the same spring, although without qawool) and numerous on the wanderers

re: Alternative World is a TV series.
Yeah. Forgot about that. It feels alot like an OVA. But whatever it is, it's a nice component of the El Hazard package.

I'm liking The Wanderers so far, I've got the first DVD.
About Fatora not being in the whole story. That's great!:D
She was annoying. I've seen the OVAs, so I don't really like the sound of Ifurita's transformation, but that's all right. She's in there atleast, right? :)
