Yeah, you see what I mean, especially when it's letting out all the steam.
In fact, I realized that when I saw the huge hand coming down over MM, while I was trying to iron my ThinkGeek.com T-shirts while watching FLCL... :heh:
Now the question is : is it really a giant electric iron and why ? Or do I have to stop pepperoni pizza at breakfast ? :D
I dont know why is a giant iron...
and yes you need to stop pepperoni pizza at breakfast ?? Whatever that means...

It could be a stylistic way to show how MM "irons out the wrinkles" on the planets they terraform.

Because it is a giant iron.......... :)

On a FLCL related web site, a guy suggested that FLCL was a metaphor on the history of the XIXth and XXth century and how Japan opened itself to the outside world.
After rewatching the series, I looked at it differently, and that made some sense...
Some WWII-related stuff :
- at the very beginning, Mamimi says something like : "If you choose the left, you can take over the world. The only problem is adjusting the parameters.". That sounds like a reference to socialism & communism.
- Ninamori is wearing a USSR sweater
- Naota's dad is wearing a nazi unifom during the gun battle
- Right after the gun battle, Naota and Mamimi are running and stop in front of a french cafe (le Cafe Bleu). It may be a reference to the capitulation treaty that Germany signed in Reims (France).
- at some point, Naota says that he almost forgot that there was a world outside (Japan's isolationism).
And then there are all these american influences :
- they fight with guitars instead of swords
- the ever-present baseball
- the south park parody
- Canti's head looks like an old american TV set
- Kaworu, er... Haroku (sorry that was tempting :D) dressed in a bunny suit when fighting the big hand robot
- the kids don't wear school uniforms, and when they do (at the end), Ninamori tells Naota that it doesn't suit him.
- the only one who's wearing a uniform is Mamimi, who has a rather closed personality (like Japan during its isolationist period)
- the great music !!!
- the giant iron (see below)
- and probably others I've missed...
The steam that it's letting out reminds me of the industrial age, where the american industry became all-powerful, and of all the modernity it brought into everyday life (electric irons, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, etc...) compared to the more 'traditional' way of doing things.
According to me, the giant iron represents the american culture that is slowly erasing (or flattening) our cultural differences by 'invading' (for lack of a better word) our mentalities.
Even though people may dislike some things about the US, we still have inherited their clothes, their food, their TV shows, games, their movies...
As a consequence, we all start to think and behave similarly, even though our respective cultures could be very different.
Anyway, these were just my (and others') 2 eurocents, I think I'll go hide now... ;)

Kannibal, I never thought of that. I must go now and re-adjust my ideas about FLCL. :D That guy did some pretty good research.

'mmmmm Interesting theory.... autor's wanted to show pop culture a lot. Japan is like all mondern countries it's "americanized" .. the part about game is maybe more "Japanisation" ... PSX .. Nintendo .. Sega ... best RPGs .. they came fron Japan ...
About communism stuff ... I dont remeber when ... But Mamimi is on Canti's shoulders and her school coat is open.. we can see that she wears a t-shirt with a red star ... it's the symbol of communism ,,,,
