THERE ARE SPOILERS!
Princess Mononoke was another great anime I saw just a week or two ago. I think it was one of the best I've seen in a while. The theory of the god of the forest... The thing that caused gods to become demons. But once the spirit of the forest died, how did the forest once again become green and full of life? Do you think the forest spirit really didn't die, but became the forest? And there was yet another example of the greedyness of the humans.... And also the love and compassion of another. This anime showed a lot of changes in the people that played in it. Like when the main character got the marking of a demon, his anger became almost uncontrollable. And once his anger came, he would have uncontrollable strength. But his uncontrollable strength wasn't only because of his anger, was it? There was something that made him want to destroy... Like whenever he saw the forest spirit in its physical form, his arm wanted to destroy it. Was that really the desire of the demon in his arm, or did he really subconsciously want to destroy it? I know I probably sound like I'm babbling, but there's a lot of spiritual sh*t in this anime... And even though it was only one movie, I got a lot out of it. Tell me what you think about all this...

One theory is that he left the physical world of humans, but still watches over them - this is hinted at when Ashitaka tells San that he cannot die - he is life itself.

The only time that happened was in the forest where his arm was occasionally going bonkers anyway. His demonic arm was basically just eating him up slowly, and it was just a bad time for him to look down.

They should have considered developing the storyline like in Baldur's Gate where you have to choose whether to succumb to the evil and hold great power or fight it and remain good. But they decided to make ashitaka plain old neutral.

[sigh]
Too bad only three people on this board care enough to write about this anime. -_-

Another possibility would be that Shishigami was capable of removing the curse. And since the curse had a life of its own, it could just be because it's reacting to the something that could end its existance.

To be honest, I never really 'got' Mononoke........why it's so revered. Obviously it's too beloved by too many people to not be pretty good, and it probably has more to do with me than the movie itself, but nonetheless, I just don't understand what everyone goes so gaga over.
They bludgeon you over the head with rather obvious symbolism, the character designs are fairly simplistic and unnatractive, and San seems to get reduced to a 'damsel in distress' by the end of the movie. Actually, they seemed to have been hyping San as the main character, and of course Ashitaka is and she's the sub-lead.
Miyazaki's stuff just seems to be rather simplistic to me compared to the work of the anime generation after him (Anno, etc.), who grew up watching anime and go into it with the intention of revolutionizing it, not just making 'good anime'.
Like I said, I'm probably just missing something, I'm not trying to diss it or anything. But where IS all this supposed depth? Enlighten the neophyte.

I, for one, have no interest in making people change their minds about anything. Anime is about entertainment, and enjoyment. Go with what you like! :D

How come... I remember... Ashitaka and San giving the head back to the Forest Spirit? And... I don't think... That the Forest Spirit BECAME the forest... I think... It's a whole thing with like... The spirit was set free... <shrugs>
And I think... Ashitaka's arm welled up like that- because he would have some sort of hate boiling inside of him... Remember the Wise Woman kept telling him, "...to see with eyes unclouded by hate" ??? Personally... I gather- that when his arm would become all psycho- it was because he was feeling hate. Look what happened when he was talking to Lady Eboshi- when she was saying she was going to kill the Forest Spirit.
I got a lot out of Mononoke, too... I just need to watch it again- to remember everything that happened... :)
