I have finally found out the translation of the name of the Nadesico.
Its full name is "Yamato Nadesico" (see the graphic novel).
This translates as Japanese Beuty
enjoy.

Sweet... thanks mate. That said, is that the literal translation? Cause I can't seem to find either word in my dictionary (that said its probably a kanji thing so don't read that I'm questioning you here I'm just trying to be clear for myself)

I seem to remember my old fansub notes mentioning something more elaborate, like 'beautiful woman' instead of just 'beauty'. Could be wrong.

It's the name of a flower too, it's the type of flower that you can see on the wreath that the captain wears on her head in the intro as a child.
What i want to know is what the flower is called in english.

You guys talking about the name of the ship, right?
Anyway, I found Nadeshiko in my dictionary and it says it's a plant. The translation into English is entered as "a pink". According to a plant encyclopaedia, it appears to be of the family "Dianthus". There are a few other possibilities but I can't confirm without pictures. I'm guessing Dianthus because one of them had a picture and the flowers looked right.
Incidently (as if you guys didn't already know), Nadesico is either someone or something's name or the name of the flower. In the anime, the flag-looking thing in the Nergal logo in the anime is in the shape of a petal from a Nadesico flower.
Anyway, I'll look into the Japanese version of the manga too.

The common name of the flower is Japanese pink, but it's really a wild carnation. I just learned this today.

Hmm....Dont believe any translation thats not a Fan-Sub. Too often do companies change words around for their own purposes
"ADV" to name one.
Hey, Fan-Subbed Nadesico in RM format was more enriching for me than the DVD (Although the difference in video quality was quite a treat)

yes, there are now three translations of the name rattling around:
Literal: Really Big Battleship Japanese Beuty.
Fansubbed: Mobile Battleship Nadesico.
ADV: Martian Successor Nadesico.
BTW. I think the name Nirgal has something to do with mars too... I was reading through Kim Stanly Robertson's Green Mars and the main character is called Nirgal. Anybody who knows japanese, can you translate that?

I pick the fansubbed one. Afterall, it is about a battleship named Nadesico. And the 'kidou' has been translated as 'mobile' ever since Gundam.
Well Really Big Battleship Japanese beuty just dosent sound right.

On TV? For some reason i don't think it'll ever get on TV...too many kids would kill themselves over Gai's death:lol:

"Nergal" or "Nirgal" is the Babylonian name for Mars.

Actually the fansubbers have it correct. The original name Kidou Senkan Nadesico, does mean Mobile Battleship Nadesico. The reason for this is threefold.
1st Kidou -> Comes from Kidou Senshi Gundam
2nd Senkan -> Comes from Uuchu Senkan Yamato
3rd Nadesico -> Comes from the old Japanese term Yamato Nadeshiko.
You've got to remember that Nadesico was essentially made as a parody of the space opera genre, hence the refs to the other series in the title.
If anyone is interested (which I doubt), I can explain what a Yamato Nadeshiko is.

Okay,
Yamato is an old name for an area of Japan, and a Yamato Nadeshiko is a traditional woman of Japan (ie, flower of Japan). Think very subservient, obedient, polite, soft spoken and the like, something that would drive the feminist movement up the wall.
Some people considered the Yamato Nadeshiko to be the point that all girls should achieve, needless to say those people would be very disappointed with modern Japan.:lol:
In any case, with reference to Nadesico, there is a implied joke. There is a battle ship (like the Yamato) filled with girls who are anything but traditional.
But of course, when it was commercialised, they changed the title to have no relation to what was originally intended. (Martian Successor Nadesico, who translated it to that?! :confused: )

But of course, when it was commercialised, they changed the title to have no relation to what was originally intended. (Martian Successor Nadesico, who translated it to that?!
If you want, I'll post to the Nadesico ML and see if Dan Kanemitsu (project translator for the series) is still subbed- he could probably answer that. I'd just give the URL to his homepage, but I don't appear to have it bookmarked.

I think it was Kitsune that called Motoko a "Yamato Nadesico" during that summer festival. Makes sense, since Motoko is the most traditional of all the LH girls.

if you look at the origional title sequence, it actually does say "martian successor" above it...
and the title of the manga is "meteor shcalcheff" or something like that...
