OK, well, I don't know if someone has posted about this before, but I don't feel like looking through 63 pages of threads to find out. What's up with that movie (Akira)? Is it acclaimed because of senseless violence or was there some meaningful, poignant, underlying notion that I couldn't find in the sea of blood? I even thought the movie was gonna end at one point, and then it went on for another half hour for what was an even more confusing and unenlightening portion. I didn't even really think the animation was that outstanding.

I'm not obscessed with it like a lot of people are, but it's a good movie for people who are new to Anime, since it's not too slushy or confusing compared to other anime.

Of all the Anime Movies I've seen, that one was the most confusing, and therefore, the worst!!!!!

I think it's so famous because it was really groundbreaking when it first came out, both in the visual effects and plot depertments. I quite liked it myself, although it did get a bit confusing in some parts and was too long IMO. The action sequences were really awesome and the weapon and bike designs... sweet. Tetsuo was an awesome villain and his conflict was kaneda was interesting to watch.

Overall, it was good.

Buy the manga!!! There are like 6 or 7 out in english.
Akira the movie is just halve of book 1, there is a lot more to the story, but they could only crammed up so much story in an two hour features, so at some point it seems a bit confusing.

Actually the movie contains the same story as the manga with a bunch, and do boy do I mean a bunch, of parts cut out of it. After reading just the first volume you will see enough new stuff that couldve extended the movie for like another hour!

AKIRA was famous because it was groundbreaking! And it still is! The animation is beautiful! and it can still stand up with some of the best series of today. It was one of the first movies to introduce the dark super future driven by corporations and filled with corruption(it predates Blade Runner so it is the first!)

I love this anime and think it is one of the best ever created. Very confusing though. But just because you dont get it the first time through doesnt mean you cant the next time. How many times did you watch Perfect Blue and EVA before you knew what the hell was going on? Those are 2 of the most acclaimed anime of the 90's and AKIRA still sits high up in the rankings with them!

OK. . . I was gonna take the one guy's advice and just look up old threads, but. . . whatever. I haven't had the opportunity to see much of EVA, but what I have seen, I understood pretty much right off. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff that'll be explained later, but that can't be helped. I also understood Perfect Blue rather well, not that I didn't think it was jacked up, but it wasn't horribly confusing. I'm not sure that AKIRA was trying to describe what was going on. If I read the manga, then sure, I'd probably get it if there's a lot more info in it, but the movie sure didn't explain much. Like exactly what AKIRA was. From the movie it sounded like it was some ultimate universal power that manifested itself at first, and then it starts saying its some sort of step beyond human or something. Then I look up threads that say all this weird crap with him being from a government project to the next stage in human evolution which causes you to bulge into a horrid freak, which doesn't make much sense to me, but, hey, the movie didn't at all really, so I'm not doubting any possibilites here. I just would like to know from some definitive source what was going on. I don't really care if there are spoilers. So, if someone who's read the manga or an interview with the author explaining all this and would like to inform me, then please do so. If not, oh, well, I'll probably read the manga someday. But, if someone does inform me, it would be nice for some serious discussion. Cuz, well, the superficial things didn't really impress me. Everyone said the animation was great, but I didn't really think it was. The people, especially. I didn't think they were drawn very well at all. Maybe for the time. . . well, yeah, cuz that was around the same time as Fist of the North Star. . . *shivers*. Anyway, so. . . yeah. I'll stop ranting now.
