hey

i've been playing around with some images and have noticed that no matter what settings i save jpeg files with (progressive, optimised hoffman etc), they always come out looking like shite in internet explorer and ms paint. they seem to lose about half of the colours and suffer a lot more "purple and green banding" than when dispayed in photoshop/acdsee on the same monitor at the same time...

what's going on????
do others have this problem ??

is there anyway to get ie to make jpegs look right ??
does microsoft just have some bizaare preference for things to be worse than they should ??

cheers : )

edit : duh - i use hi-colour which seems to exacerbate (i had to look that one up : ) the problem, but it's still there in tru colour.. not as obvious though... crappy ie.. what a stupid flaw...

well...jpeg files on ms paint will look like crap 'coz ms paint can only modify .bmp (bitmap) files

as for IE...i think the jpeg files should be set to high resolution to make it look good...

as for photoshop/acdsee...those programs are image manipulation/image viewer and they're programed to view/edit images no matter what the resolution the jpeg file uses...

it's not the resolution, it's the colour reproduction..
it seems like ie is trying to display the jpegs using only 256 colours or something...

does anyone know a good tech-head forum where i could ask this???

sorry if i'm not that a tech-head...i'm only trying to help
give me at least some credit...

here's what you do...follow this instruction

start -> settings -> control panel -> display -> settings

look at the bottom left corner...you should see a color palette option
set the color resolution to the highest setting (like 32-bit)
you should not set the color setting to 256 or lower 'coz it will only show crappy images...

again...at least give me some credit for trying

I think that's only if you have some kind of image program like Adobe Photoshop already installed, then a plugin that enables jpg saving will occur in MsPaint.

As of your jpg problem, save the file at the most highest quality, biggest file you can get, and try that

What image program do you use?
and can you upload a quick image so we can see what you're talking abouut

suzaku, your input is appreciated..
as i noted in my first post, running at maximum colour depth (tru-colour 24 bit) does help, but it's still there.. unfortunately i don't use tru-colour because my video card can't use it a 1024x768

i'm sure my old pc and video card aren't helping, nor are the low quality images i'm using...

this is part of a screen grab showing ie5 on the left, to acdsee on the right... both are displaying the exact same image (part of my hair - i've been playing with a digital camera)..

please tell me if you notice the difference or if it is just my pc ??

what rendering method are you using in ACDsee?

i think i found your problem...

it's your PC and your video card...or maybe your driver for the video card

if not then i think you should set the resolution to 800x600 since you old pc and video card can't support 1024x768...

well, i've sort of worked it out..
acdsee was using dithering, which (aparently) makes 24 bit images look a lot better than they normally would when the computer is set to 16bit.. and ie5's dithering option does nothing... ugh

now i remember why i hate compresion : /

thanks, bloodgod
