I've heard a lot of different opinions about FY and I was considering collecting the series on DVD. So my first question would be, is it worth it?? My second question is, could someone give me a brief summary of the series. Thanks a lot ^^

Whether or not Fushigi Yuugi is worthwhile to collect on DVD (or any other format, for that matter) depends entirely on what you enjoy watching. I personally think it is quite worthwhile to get this series, mainly because it is up there in my top ten series of all time.
Now, I will attempt to give you a summary that doesn't contain spoilers.
Fushigi Yuugi is a alternate-world romance. The main character is Yuuki Miaka, a junior high-school girl studying for the high-school entrance exams. She and her best friend Hongo Yui go to the National Library to do some studying, and through a course of events find themselves transported through a book into the Universe of the Four Gods.
For the most part the series takes place in the "book" world although there are times when it switches back to the "real" world. Miaka becomes Suzaku no Miko and has to find her seven seishi to be able to summon Suzaku. Stuff happens, and then the series draws to a close. I can't say any more without giving spoilers, which I try to avoid doing as much as possible.
Now other things, some of which I'm sure you probably know.....
- The TV series contains 52 episodes
- There are currently two OVAs that have been released
- They are working on the third OVA in Japan, but it won't come to America for a while.
I hope that helps, and I hope you give this series a try, because it is definitely worth it!

As far as I know, the TV series are split into 2 DVD packs and the OVA makes up the third.
Having seen all the TV, OVA 1, and some of OVA 2, I would get the OVA pack first. Whilst the story of OVA 1 has been given relatively bad reviews, it does set up the story for OVA 2 and also manages to be a self contained story in itself.
If you can afford all of it, I think it's definitely worth it. It's a great story. I also recommend that you have the second TV DVD pack before finishing the first one in case you do get into the story, because you're not going to want to stop.
And if you get into the series, remember that it also exists as a manga. I think they've at least gotten as far as volume 7 in the english translation, and there are 18 volumes in total.
