Macross (full title: Superdimensional Fortress Macross) was an anime made in the early '80s, I believe. Robotech is actually three unrelated anime (Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeadia) tied together and edited/Americanized for broadcast on television. Macross is the first part of Robotech, and lasts for 36 episodes or so. In addition to giving the cast new names, there were a few other content changes. There was also the movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love?", released in America as "Attack of the Bioroids." The movie retells the story with new animation, I think. Robotech is being released on DVD by ADV films. This is only the English, edited version. Macross will soon be released by Animeigo, fully restored and with the Japanese, unedited version.

Macross Plus is an OAV serie of 4 episode, which was released around 95-96, I don't know for sure, but its rather new, with good animation and new types experimental Veritech(airplaines).

The confusion comes from Robotech, which was three unrelated shows, remember. Macross was the first part of Robotech. It then goes on to Southern Cross. Macross Plus is the true continuation of Macross, taking place 30 years after the events depicted in the TV series. None of the characters return, but it takes place in the same universe. It doesn't help that Robotech and Macross plus are being released by different companies does it? Macross Plus was mushed together and released as a movie, but it isn't on DVD and I haven't seen a copy on VHS in years. If you want information on the individual shows, try www.anipike.com.
Actually, Macross Plus is an alternate storyline, just like what you have in Star Trek. According to the Macross Compendium, a similar fighter to the YF 19 and YF 21 existed in another Macross series, Macross 7 I think. Well, thats what I know.. there's my two cents on the topic..
oh yeah, and Macross Plus was a 4 part OAV and a movie which was the OAV condensed together with about 20 minutes (?) of new animation.
Ack! my bad! Yeah, MPlus is in the same storyline. Guld was born in 2014, Isamu Dyson in 2015 and Myung Fang Lone in 2016..

Actually,I think it's just Mospeda, but I may be wrong.Anyway,if you want there is a listing of Robotech episodes that shows the episodes for each saga, though Southern Cross and Mospeda were heavily edited to make the series work a little better.Southern Cross didn't even take place on earth,so they had to edit out a second moon seen in some scenes to make it look like it takes place on Earth.Anyway here is that little guide http://www.robotech.com/infopedia/episodes/ You also have to remember that Robotech Masters=Southern Cross and New Generation is Mospeda. I hope that info helps you a little :)
