Nope it dont mean blank
black usually represents death, and in noir there is a lot of people dying.

Actually, "Noir" does mean "black" in french.
Its use in the English language originates from the term that Film Critics in France began using from 1954 onwards to define the American Gangster Film, that is: Film Noir .
In other words: Black Film . These bleak and unwholesome portraryls of (mostly) urban decay rose as an artistic response to the social upheval caused by WWII, after which everyone's values concerning sex, race, crime, justice and morality in general is completely re-evaluated.
Artistic trademarks of Film Noir include dim lighting, off centred camera focus to create suspense, heavy contrast between light and shadows, the disorienting use of flashbacks and voiceovers, brutal yet bloodless violence, and of course black and white camerawork (for the most part).
Thematic trademarks include; A world of darkness and fear, the inability to trust anybody , bad things happening to good people and vice versa, disorientation, powerful women that threaten masculinity as a whole (the femme fatale ), disempowered men who wallow in the depths of violence and misogyny to preserve their masculinity, widespread cynicism, and of course the inescapable spiral of doom and despair.
In fitting with almost every one of the above categories (except for black and white, wich is reserved for flashbacks), Noir for the most part is the definitive "Film Noir" of anime.
This is one of the first anime I really haven't been too impressed with. The animation itself has nothing to be desired... The music score always seems to be out of place... The plot is just godawful... I only feel hate towards both of the main characters... Violence is the only way... Sure they're asassins, but for asassins they suck too...
I dunno... I watch it, but I definately don't enjoy it.
I heard that fansubbing might stop at eps 21 because some company released news that they will by the rights to Noir.... not 100% sure though, don't quote me on it

Given that ep 22 was released a couple of days ago, you're probably incorrect ^^;
What you're thinking of is ADV's announcement a couple of months ago that they had acquired the rights to the series, a statement which they were forced to retract about a week later. One can only assume that negotiations hadn't been finalised yet and some ADV rep jumped the gun (probably pissing off both negotiating parties since they're not meant to say anything at all until everything is settled).
Anyway, bottom line is that Noir is not licensed in the West for now, but undoubtedly will eventually be licensed by ADV. Apparently the Western release will have even more bells and whistles than the Japanese dvd release, they are still adding more touches to the animation and that sort of thing so it sounds like it will be worth getting (once it gets released in a decade's time, given ADV's usual rate of releases)

Yay! I just watched episode 1 after 3 1/2 days of downloading (damn 56k). It definitely lived up to my expectations. And damn, the quality was worth the 200mb. Now, if all things go well I'll be able to watch one or two episodes per week. Fortunately, I've already gotten a friend of mine to burn eps 12-18 for me... I just need 2-11 now. Anyway, Noir kicks ass...and...um... yeah.
I really like Noir i like the ending theme and its a great story from what i have seen. I really like it and cant wait to find out what happens next. :)
i've started to watch Noir.
it's pretty good at the moment and looking forward in watching more eps ^_^
yep - the music is very nice...btw...there's one particular song that they play in the episodes sometimes and it sounds somewhat 'haunting' in a way...just wondering...they're singing in French yes?

Canta Per Me is by far one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful soprano pieces in media next to the one sung in Braveheart . It truly captures the tragedy of Kirika's inescapable descent into damnation at such a tender young age.

I don't know ant exact dates, but John Ledford of ADV has said that they do have the rights to Noir. I know they said it before and then retracted the claim, but now it is almost certain that they do have it.
is that a good thing or a bad thing?
