English subtitling

has anyone read the subtitles compared to the english track. it's quite fuuny. for example minnie may says "for sure" the subtitle says "really" it gets pointless after the subtitles take out all the character of the script.:mad:
I got my GSC DVD from America so it may be different but i doubt it

i got the DVD and started watching it subed, with in seconds i realized how diffrant they are. bill never calls them 'pussy cat/s'

Well I think most Anime's are like that. i've even seen big differences in the subtitles of Evangelion. I say just watch it with subs or without. If you flick through English and Japanese then you get confused... Badly

I've noticed the same thing in most Animes I've watched, especially the ADV ones. Most of the time this is to get the english lipsync right.

but still in makes the script and the characters loose a bit of "colour".

Yeah, most people will agree that subbed anime in general is better than dubbed.

the problem for me personally about subs is that i'm more of a visual person and i like to watch and savour the artwork not read words at the bottom of the screen. as i said this is a personal perference and i do take into account of other views and understand where they're coming from.;)

When I saw the subbed version, they did change a lot of things - little things, but nonetheless made a difference. Like when Washington said "I thought so." I mean, how the hell would he have been able to connect a punk like Bill to a bounty hunter like Rally. But when I saw the subbed, it made sense.

Well don't forget that they can translate it diffently from what the acual script… Also the dubbing is different because it saves time and money to fill in the gaps and some areas with other words instead of what was orignally said… Look at Speed Racer…

i do think the dub scripts have been changed to reflect an american/western audience and to a larger degree to the "more american" characters.
those scripts to japanese just wouldn't work ;)

do u all know japanese to say those things? if u do, what do u care about subs. I'm still learning in hope of not using any subs anymore. But im starting to think that japanese is unsubbable desu ne?

Because most of us understand english, the subtitles have been translated from the japanese script.

This makes it useful when you are watching GSC in the Jap Language. But is also what causes the subtitles not to match the dub that well.

Now this is where I see the problem lie. We have 2 options. If we could only get the English version then most of us wouldn't complain about the Subs. Now look at Speed Racer. It was badly dubbed but the kids of that time didn't care. But because we are brought up with two options, we are not sure of which to use. And to be honest, while we are too busy tying to figure out which language to view it in, we forget about the anime as a whole, which in turn lessens the Anime's true value.

You think thats funny? The funnier ones are like when Rally says "I hate to gamble..." and the subtitles are "It goes against my policy to rely on luck".

Another funny bit is when Rally says "Bingo" in the Japanese dub (or whatever you'd call it). It gave me a shock at first :lol:
