Another thing that seemed strange in Vandread is how the pirates seem very well equipped.Let's say everything on the actual ship is a product of Ikazuchi and they're ship merging, but there's also the big squadrons of dreads, well prepared formations, huge crew, all very well dressed with uniforms.
And they captured the Ikazuchi, wich was the men's biggest ship with an elite crew, without much difficulty.
*spoilers*
And they also destroyed an earth mothership, wich had whiped out an entire fleet of ships before.

What did you expect? Some goofballs that don't know what they where doing, they wouldn't last five minutes as space pirates if they just go out and shoot randomly into space with a space shuttle. I think experience plays a big role in their preparation as well. As stated in eps 3 or 4, there are also "Korukus" that fights with the pilots in the background, refuelling, armanents, logistics etc.
As for the pride of the Male fleet, its an outdated old transport cruiser, with some new add ons, but I think it was relying on the Vanguard to fights and on the occasion the heavy weapon, but against small ships its pretty much useless. Also it was a suprise attacked so there was not really much times to get the Vanguard ready and the Ships is full of rookies instead of veteran fighters.
The reason they beat the mothership, was because 1) they used alien enhanced fighters, notice in episode 2, where everybody was amazed at how the fighters they have is changed so much including the Vanguard, they just feels much less the same so that the pilots won't have to adjust too much to it. Do you think after morphing through natural cause that the fighters would still be usable? Would the fighter have morphing capability after a natural phenomenon? Hell no, the aliens yet to be named have modified the mothership and the fighters.
2) They made a starburst, causing a supernova(or something similar, astronomy isn't my cup a tee) and used that energy to thrust throught the earth mothership.

Note though that the priates have been in operation for a long time, so they have managed to steal resources over many years. they also have a base (as implied in about the first ep), and their tech is much more advanced that the males'.
I agree with everything said above, in general at least, but would like to add: If the were hopless losers, with no fighting capacity, they wouldn't last five minutes in a real battle. This would make a really crap serris and so of course they are gonna be well prepared professionals.
And what they actually did to defeat the mothership was create a star from a Gas Giant planet. The inital combustion was rather violent, which is what they used.

Well,Rat Bastard seems to be able to fend for himself alright, and he doesn't have a big battleship nor a squadron of Dreads at his command.

Mister Rat Bastard is a freelancer, selling himself out to the highest bidder, in this case to earth the enemy so he doesn't have to worried about them and the pirates have no intention of killing until he wreck the hyperdrive system. Basicly he made no enemies, just doing what is most profitable and keeping his hides intact.

True, but the harvesters from earth aren't the only enemies out there. There's the men and women of Taakaru and Meijeru, and as we have seen, many other planets inhabited by other human civilizations wich could be potential enemies.
Yeah, but you saw that Monkey's mecha. And from what I can tell his ship is extremly fast, cause he runs away all the time.

plus he flogs off bootleg stuff to ships' engineers to slow them down.

My point exactly. If a double crossing con and a dumb monkey can defend themselves, why are the Nirvana crew so prepared? And I don't mean just weapons and defense. They got uniforms, they got rooms that would remind you more of a 4 star hotel than a pirate ship, uniformed weapons and Dreads(save the main characters's of course),precise battle strategies wich makes them more look like a mini-army then a a bunch of pirates.
Usually pirates wear their own clothes and use whatever weapon they can find right?
No offense m8, but your makeing no sense.

Grrrr, why am I the only one finding this strange???
Look at any other type of pirates,in space or on sea.You see people with different clothing, low quality weapons, and they are never really rich.
Yet those in Vandread have an almost endless supply of food and ammunition,a topnotch army, and a great battleship. It's the series that makes no sense

Darklightz, can you see the logic in your own post? The man is well prepared himself in your post, am I not correct?
A con artist(I don't know about you but conmen's are usually very well prepared) and a Monkey with a Powersuit. Mister Rat Bastard has already prepared his escape way before his arrival on the Nirvana(He happens to carry crooked parts with him which explodes by remote control or was it a timer, its been a long time since I saw that episode). With a Fast ship and the right connection. How does a human out of grace could ever approach the Terrans without being blown to pieces(or harvested).

Its a very well known fact that womens are way more organised than us men and a good wardrobe is always a must. And there was no endless supply of food, they usually plunder a planet when supply ran low, see episode 5. As I mentioned before they are well organised cause of experience and its a modern age so don't think of this as some Red beard cartoon, these are modern pirates who takes tops notch stuff and wouldn't settle for less, see how dissapointed they where when realising they captured the pride of the male fleet, was un outdated cruiser, I would be more than happy to accept it, know what I mean;)
What did you expect them to take, some sh!tty jewelry that they can't use cause the homeworld don't like them and the male planet won't accept them.
Just a note...
It wasent the battleship they capture but the original colony ship.
BUt that raises another point. Why build a battleship onto an outdated colony ship?

I guess the colony ship is the only thing big enough to fit all those Vanguard in and maybe they ran low on Resource.
Wel, I'm not sure about this, cause it was a bit confusing, but I think that the ship was origanaly a battleship, was turned into a colony ship, and then was turned back into a Battle ship. But I may have got things messed up.
