I'd still like to hear opinions from people who already saw end of evangelion about what really happened at the end.

So do I, dont you have one?

anyway, here's what I think:

although EoE was supposed to answer all the mysteries of Eva, it did manage to raise more questions. One of these was its actual ending.

Now for those who have not seen EoE let me warn you that there are going to be **SPOILERS AHEAD**

what was i supposed to say, ah yes,

Based on what I've seen, i have come to believe that the Third Impact failed since it was rejected by Shinji who was entrusted with the fate of the entire human race.

Ill base my answer on this: After Shinji is dumped by Asuka, he gets so pissed off that he decides everyone should die, thus Rei starts collecting everyone's souls. Later, after Shinji & Unit 01 merge with Rei/Lilith, Shinji realizes that he wants everyone alive again instead of living as one - so, unit 01 comes out, releases its wings and then the black moon explodes returning all the souls back to the earth. We then see Shinji talking with Yui (both are moving away from each other) after that, Shinji gains back his human form outside Lilith, and bids goodbye to his mom. We then hear Yui saying that "as long as one has the will to live, one can gain human form" (or something like that). Finally we see Shinji and Asuka lying down with the remains of lilith and the eva series in the background.

I agree that third impact seems to have failed, but is everyone just dead? All souls just floating around earth? How the heck did Asuka survive? Those are the main questions that are obstacles to a personal theory on the end. But from what i know now, i'd have to see it seems like Shinji and Asuka are the only ones left. (This theory isn't permanent because like i said i can't underestand how Asuka is still alive)

ok, i'll elaborate my original answer based on the questions you gave

1. but is everyone just dead?
>>>physically, I have to agree, but like Yui said, as long as one has the will to live on he can gain human form - just like Shinji (who popped out of the sea of LCL outside Rei/Lilith) - remember he was inside unit 01, which was absorbed by Rei/Lilith, then he lost his form, just like the others

2. All souls just floating around earth?
>>>yes, and as i said previously ...black moon explodes returning all the souls back to the earth. But as mentioned above, if one has the will to live on then he can regain human form.

3. How the heck did Asuka survive?
>>>In the first place she didnt want to die, her touching Shinji's face was probably a sign that she thanked him for his decision.

so to sum it up, Shinji, who was entrusted with the fate of the entire human race, rejected complementation and wished that everyone be alive again and separated by an A.T. Feild - thus Humanity did not evolve into a god. Shinji and Asuka were simply the first people to regain their human form - they can be considered the new Adam and Eve in the sense that they could be proof to the other souls "floating around the earth" that they can also regain thier human form and be alive again.

that's a good explanation, maybe there is some hope in the ending after all.

i was just taking a quick glance at eoe again and i caught some lines of dialogue that might be important.
Rei and karou say this dialogue as impact fails
I will give my analysis after each line

The real world exists somewhere a dream exists in what we are and dreams are in your heart people's hearts make their future. Imagination will change their mind and phsyical forms the power of imagination will make their lives and futures.

Does this mean that people's lives and realities are going to be shaped by what they imagine? By what they want to be real?

nothing will change if you don't live with your own will
so you should pick yourself up when you fall to the bottom of the earth even though you can't find the words

I believe this refers to the next scene with shinji's mother in which he rises out of the sea in human form again thus finding his own will.

when one can imagine themself with spirit anyone can gian human form
don't worry all life has the ability to recover
all have the will to live on if one wants to live on
a haven can be anywhere because we're alive
the chance to be happy is everywhere
as long as the sun the moon and the earth exist we're all safe

This might be what you stated, that all humans can regain physical form and all have the will to live on.

It seems just like it always has been, open to interpretation on either side, but what do you think of this dialogue?

oh yes one more thing :-)
your asuka theory might explain why shinji still strangles her, i think he expects everyone to be alive but when he saw rei, then he saw asuka and she looked dead, so out of frustration because he doesn't think anything has returned to normal he starts to strangle her, and when she shows him she's alive he starts crying because he realizes she is alive. Of course i don't think anything can explain her final line of the movie, "i feel sick"

"caught some lines of dialogue that might be important."

i like that :)

i think the ending is something that you have to develop your own interpretation of...

I sort of started this at "My understandind of EOE".
It's sort of relevant again so here it is

I've only seen the movie "End of Evangelion" once at a comic con. (standing up and it was in subtitles) so I maybe wrong about this.

I THINK that why Shinji is on Auska at the end of EOE is because Shinji wants to love Auska but he can't love anyone because he feels that no one has loved him. After all that has happened to him with his parents and so on he feels Alone. He still wants company and that is why Auska is there with him. Is Auska there for real or is it just in his imagation for some company.

If Auska is there for real is sort of means that she is in the same boat as Shinji. She dose'nt have a love, but she seems to hate Shinji and him being there is more of a punishment that anything. Unless she really dose like Shinji but not in that way. The Series showed some intrest by Auska towards Shinji but only when she was a better pilot than Shinji, but when Shinji got to be a better pilot than Auska, She started to hate Shinji.

The "I feel sick" quote, Auska in Rei's bandages, ummmm, this MAY dispute what I just wrote but... Shinji wants to love Auska but can't, because he hates Auska's personallaty, but he finds her body Attractive. Shinji hates the fact that Rei's a Clone but she reminds him of his mother (dose Shinji know that Rei's his mother clone???) Rei's personallaty is the personallaty that Shinji likes the most. So Shinji makes up the perfect person in his mind and Instrmentally creates her. But because he can't love, Shinji can't be with everyone else.

If Shinji dose fall in love with this new Auska will he be one soul with everyone or will it be too late???

To anyone who read this Thanks. I don't know if I'm right or wrong but when I watched it, (the one time) that's how I understood it. If you can think of any other Conclusions to the Ending please post

No one can REALLY understand Evangelion

very true, everyone has their own opinion of the end of evangelion but it always helps to hear other's ideas to help you develop your own

Keroppilee, basically the questions you asked again were already contained my interpretation of the end. as for the Asuka theory and why she cries, here's what i think:

After Asuka touches Shinji's cheek, Shinji starts to cry, then she says "i feel sick" - perhaps what she meant here was, here is Shinji, the guy who practically decided the fate of humankind, and i thought that he was already man enough to live with the decision he made.

hmmm... perhaps this will need to be refined...

what do you think?

I'll keep it R

Well in Eoe...the 3rd impact was initiated in the end....if you guys realised this, eva01 and shinji was likened to be like jesus christ when he was crucified by the longinus spear.in other words, the human instrumentality project(which basically was to destroy everyone's AT field which kept the shapes of humans) was initiated....to merge everyone into one single soul so there wldn't be hurt or pain or emptiness in anyone

but shinji rejected this concept-the instrumentality project as he wanted badly to see the gang again even though rei and kaworu warned him that if the at fields were to return...hurt would return along with it and he may be hurt once more..but he doesnt mind...and we witness the giant rei/lilth breaking up.....In other words...the movie wasnt really a pessimistic one but rather it ended the series rather well. we as fans would want a "HAPPY-EVERYONE LIVES" ending. But no.. it doesn't end that way but as Ikari Yui phrases it at one point there's no need to worry....everything will return back to normal....anyplace can be a heaven if only a person wishes to live.

in the final scene if you all recall only asuka and shinji were left alive.i wldnt think this of shinji hoping that everyone wld die or what but rather the interpretation of a new "adam & eve" of a new generation.

does anyone else wonder how asuka and shinji would survive in the new world? It looks like the earth is all covered in lcl and no life is left plant animal or otherwise except for the two.

one more thought before i go off on jly 4 holiday :)
I agree shinji wish to see everyone again, but if that was his wish why is it only 2 people made it?

i guess i must be dense, i didn't quite catch your explanation for that, would you mind posting it exactly?

SHINJI AND ASUKA WERE SIMPLY THE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO REGAIN THEIR HUMAN FORM - they can be considered the new Adam and Eve in the sense that they could be proof to the other souls "floating around the earth" that they can also regain thier human form and be alive again.

why? well, (i'll use the loophole) eva has a lot of mysteries and missing scenes. Perhaps there were already others who had regained thier human form - remember the scene when Shinji is talking to both Rei and Kaworu and bodies of people start appearing? that could be it, or perhaps the others were just scattered all over the earth.

How about how Yui escapes in U1??

How come no one mentions this?

SHE FLOATS OFF INTO SPACE!!! SHE GOT WHAT SHE WANTED!!
SHINJI SAYS GOODBYE TO HER!!

As for the Sh/As bit, that's a bit to complicated for me.
There are many possibilities. The end is not pessimistic though. But it is no fairytale.

I dont think Yui actually got out of unit 01, (but i have to watch EoE again - drat! i really need a memory pill  )

why? i'll have to develop an answer, i cant find the right words to explain it...
