Anime Timeline Error?? (some spoilers)

There is still one nagging question I have about the anime. In the first episode, which is supposed to be from the Black Swordsman arc of the manga, the man in the tavern says the trouble started when Griffith became the king of Midland. At that point in the timeline, there wasn't even a Griffith, only Femto. I don't know when, if ever, Griffith becomes king, but I don't think at that point in time he could have been king.

If I remember what I learned after watching the series, the first episode is a continuation of the last...so there would be knowledge of Griffith.
