Sorry if I'm offending any Fushigi Yuugi fans, but what is Fushigi Yuugi? I've heard that is an extremely famous anime (and a new one also) and that it takes place in ancient China. I've also read part of a book too.
Fushigi Yuugi is a shoujo anime - drama, romance, action, fantasy all rolled into one.
The title means "Mysterious Play".
Basically it's about these two Junior High school students Miaka and Yui. One day, going to the library to study - they find a book entitled "Four Gods' Sky and Earth" and both girls gets sucked into the book.
they end up in a place very similiar to ancient China
There is this legend, that there are 4 gods which protect these 4 countries - and they can only be summoned by their priestesses (which are called Mikos).
Mikos are basically girls who are from another world.
hence, the adventure begins.....
(don't want to reveal any spoilers)
yes it's a very popular anime series - but not that new though.
hope that helped ^_^

Well, along with everything Matsu said, Fushigi Yuugi is a great series by Yuu Watase, with 18 volumes for manga (don't know about graphic novels) and LOTS of music. Lots of bishonen for those who need them. 52 episodes for the TV series, 6 for the OVAs.

Actually....
There are 18 volumes of manga and several novels (not written by Yuu Watase, but authorized by her). I believe that only the first six volumes of the manga have currently been translated into English, but the Japanese version is better anyway.
The series itself is 52 episodes long. The first OVA is three episodes long, and the second OVA (only OVA with manga backing) is six episodes long.
They are in the process of making a third OVA, but I don't know when it will be released. Pioneer already has the rights though.

Indeed, can't wait for the 3rd OAV.... >>
BTW, by watching FY, ya sure to have a great time if you love shoujo-like animé. ^^ The bishounens are sooo cute.... *drools at Tasuki* The plot is real cool... There's kickass scenes... Only disadvantage that fans can tell you is the constant "Miaka! Tamahome!" (the 2 main chars calling each other) during the whole series. ^^; But FY is great and rules~~

I'll take a crack at answering that question.....
shoujo anime translates literally to "girl(s) anime" and the equivilant for boys is shounen. Now, these terms are used to describe or define a series, but it should not be taken as "boys do not watch shoujo" or "girls do not watch shounen". My little brothers are perfect examples of shoujo anime fans. Their favorite series include Fushigi Yuugi, Card Captor Sakura, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, and Kodomo no Omocha.
A series can really only be classified as shoujo or shounen by where the manga was published. This means if a series was published by something like Shounen Sunday, it is by definition a shounen series. If a series was published by something like Ribon Mascot Comics, it is going to be classified as a shoujo series.
The following is a list I've made of some of the more common elements/situations found in shoujo series. (I have a list for shounen as well, but am not going to put it up here). It should be noted that this list is in no way definitive, and should be seen as simply being my view on the situation rather than the gospel.
Shoujo anime/manga
==========
- two words: magical girl (think Sailor Moon and stuff like that)
- large numbers of bishounen/biseinen characters (Fushigi Yuugi falls in this category)
- The story focuses highly on relationships (FY also fits in here)
- The characters appear to be very fashion conscious.
I'm sure there are more things, but I can't remember everything at the moment. Anyway, hope that helps.

Speaking of the 3rd OVA... Last I heard it was in production, but does anyone know of a release date for it?
