Requirements of a Fushigi Yuugi Miko

-You have to be pretty.

ne... so who chooses the miko for their respective gods? Is it the gods themselves that call forth their miko? At the beginning of the series we see Miaka being taunted by a suzaku bird to follow her to the secret room that had the book.

I'm also wondering why it never occured to Yui that she was a virgin since she was able to call her god... funny isnt it? after blaming miaka and trying to do evil plots with Nakago.. it never once occured to her that she was a virgin if she was able to call forth her god?

I'm pretty sure the gods themselves pick their miko ...which made me wonder why both Yui and Miaka first got pulled in to the book in the very beginning. (I guess Suzaku couldn't make up his mind :p)

Something that confused me is the god's actual alignments. Whereas Seiryuu in the TV series seemed to desire Earth's destruction, *MINOR SPOILER* in the OVA series he was trying to protect it? *END MINOR SPOILER*

As for the virginity thing, Yui didn't know that was a prerequisite to being a Miko. All she knew was what panse-boy Nakago told her ...talk about misguided. (I felt bad for her, but she sure as hell should of given Miaka more of chance to explain everything.) Miaka didn't know that was a rule till she *SPOILER* failed to summon Suzaku the first time. *END SPOILER* After that, Taiitsukun decided it might be pertinent information ...

I would say it's the gods. Gods are like that...

Ahem....

Yui was not raped while Miaka was in the "real" world. Nakago found her before the thugs could do anything and pulled them off of her. Well, he probably blasted them off of her, but that's not the point. The point is, she was never raped. Had she been raped, she would no longer have been a virgin, and Seiryuu would never have shown up. Nakago just let her think that she had been raped, because this made her very easy to control and manipulate.

As for the...alignments of the gods....

Seiryuu is not evil. He does not actually desire the destruction of the world. It should be noted that Tenkou was pulling Nakago's strings and Nakago was controlling Yui who was the miko so Seiryuu had to do what he was told to do. Also, Seiryuu is a god of war. War has a tendency to be destructive whether or not the deity itself is.

As for the OVAs, think about it for a minute. Does Seiryuu really want to be destroyed? I don't think so. Therefore, even if he is evil, it is in his best interests to keep the world more or less intact. He needs worshipers after all, and he won't very well have those if the world is destroyed. Besides, Tenkou was trying to take over. I don't think that would make Seiryuu (or any of the other gods) particularly happy.

Anyway... The requirements have nothing to do with beauty, and it's most likely just common for girls of about that age to be mikos because they tend to still be virgins... As for a written rule about age... Hmm... Never heard of one, myself. But, I suppose the deities would want someone young and full of life for them to feast upon, no?

Why were Yui and Miaka both summoned at first? Well, I suppose it could be that Suzaku couldn't make up his mind... Or... Seiryu already had his eye on Yui-chan. And yes, it is the beast gods themselves who choose the priestess.

Bit of a spoiler below, but I still suggest you read it if you are one of the people uncertain about Yui's sex life....
