What was the purpose of the chief giving Naota his eyebrows? Where they a symbol of adulthood? I've noticed that Naota looses them once Haruko comes back.

I remember the chief mentioning that he had once been Haruko's target and gained his thick eyebrows afterwards. The eyebrows probably represent doubt or suspicion. On the last episode, the chief knows what Haruko is after and tries to convince Naota not to help her. He no longer has the thick eyebrows and chooses Haruko over him and helps her with her plan.

Perhaps those eyebrows express an exaggeration of the Chief's doubt/anger at Haruko and developed those bushy eyebrows, thus, passed them along to Naota. Your eyebrows assist your eyes to convey a strong emotion such as anger, happiness or jealousy. The chief was probably designed or gained those bushy eyebrows to ‘underline’ his distrust of Haruko.

Other than the obvious masculine charm that the eyebrows cause, I think they are also used to keep MM from coming out of your head. Note that in episode five, once Amarao's eyebrows come off Haruko is able to pull that crappy slingshot out of his head.

Then after that he acts like a wuss. That might explain the loss of his "slingshot" as the loss of his... manhood.

Amaro obviously doesn't have any real eyebrows of his own. With them on, he's The Man, acting in charge, looking tough, etc. When they give him trouble or fall off, he turns into whining jelly-filled shell of a man.

The question is, did Naota go through such a radical change?

yeah his eyebrows are seaweed and the boomerang is tiny guitar ^_^, i think it shows his lack of maturity compaired to naota who gets a kickass one!

to me, the cardboardEYEBROWS on Naota represented his giving in and accepting the denial of imagination and belief in imagination.

for more elaboration, see my thread on FLCL Themes (http://animeboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33324).

and Mr.EYEBROWS himself, cries because he doesn't know what to do with himself without his rigid cardboardEYEBROWS.

Having just started looking into FLCL last night...I thought those eyebrows were 2 by 4's... oh well, maybe I shouldn't judge an anime by it's artwork, like I did Galaxy Express 999...

if you're going to be judging FLCL by animation alone, you're going to love it.
