Heya! I just bought the Akira special edition DVD for $27 or $29 and before I open it, I wanted your opinions on the movie. Was the movie really good, or was is bland and I should bring it back to the store and get my money back? PLEASE let me know!

Akira was the first anime I ever watched... its the film that single-handedly made anime popular in the western world and with good reason. All the anime staples are there:- guns, psychic powers, cool bikes, spiritual stuff, etc...

Open it now and enjoy! But do NOT watch the dubbed version...

Treacherous ground, trying to decide between the old dub and the new dub...

Other than that, Akira is, in my most humble opinion, required watching for anime fans. You may love it, you may question it, you may wish you spent your money on fast food. Akira has a lot packed into it for a movie...the graphic novel is something like 5 massive volumes. Therefore, there are some hard-to-grasp parts. But I still love watching it. It truely is a landmark in cinema.

Thank you so much for your opinions guys ^_^ I really appreciate it! Hehe, when I get home from college tonight (I'm in the computer lab), I'll have to watch it... or I'll get some sleep and watch it tomorrow :heh: But thank you anyway!!! Hehe, Akira certainly seems to have a good review from you guys ~_^

Many people hold the view that Akira is responsible for animes popularity in the west. While I don't believe this, I do agree that it did play a significant role and is a damn good movie :)

Heh,actually I just got it on Sunday and watched it yesterday, and I really liked it.I was surprised it took me that long to see it,it was really good.It got a little confusing at times(maybe I was just really tired) but it's definitely the best anime movie I've seen so far.I'm pretty sure you'll really enjoy it.

I really liked Akira... It's alot of people's first movie- but mine was Princess Mononoke... I'm just different I guess, (well, my friends, Santana and Amy... Their first was Neon Genesis Evangelion- because I had them watch it... And their sister, Laura, her first was Ranma).

I really liked Akira. It's not my favorite... But it is in my top five. :) (Third to be exact.)

I didn't care for Akira, the fight scenes were okay at the begining but all that telekenesis, exploding arm thing really got old. I think that back during the 80s the movie was grouldbreaking because of the graphics and of course the blood and guts, now it's just a classic.

I've just watched it!!!!!! I thought it was really neat! The movie over-all was a little odd and quite far-fetched, but I loved it nontheless! ^_^ Was very neat!

It was quite good. For how old the movie is I still don't own it. It's worth it just for the bike scenes. I'm buying it right now. (Runs out the door that shuts locked behind him.) Forgot my keys, oh well.

Akira played a major part in bringing Japanese Animation to the Western world. I thought it was a good movie, it's good to watch due to the praise it's given and the revolutionary animation it had. A classic if you will.

It's a bit incomprehensible, but on DVD, it's absoulutely breathtaking.

The DVD (I've got the special edition) is absolutely amazing. Even the menu window is sensational to look at. Its one of the best actual DVDs (not talking about the movie but the menus and stuff) itself. I really liked it.

Recently I've been hearing more newbie anime fans put this movie down; saying it didn't live up to the hype and all. Is it doomed to be lost in our anime generation? I look back on older anime, and yes, japanese animation has enhanced itself greatly. The invention of the DVD player has also helped enlighten anime now days. :)

Why would you buy Akira (unless by recommendation) and then ask the boards whether or not you should take it back to the shop for a refund?!

I know this is too late but next time don't buy anime unless you've seen it or been recommended. It's an expensive hobby buying run of the mill....

.....but there again you didn't! You bought one of the best movies (let alne anime) of all time!!

:tongue3:

At the time, I was still new to anime and was trying to get into the different anime series and movies. Now, my parents don't go to shops that have a good selection of anime very often, and since I can't drive, I get a DVD that looks/sounds good whenever I can.

The guy at the store, who is a fellow anime fan, recommended this movie, but he also recommended several others. But I still wasn't sure as to whether or not it would be a good movie, so I asked you guys for your opinions on it. Yeah, my logic was backwards, but this post was made quite a while ago... :heh: Anyways, thanks for your imput all. *coughs*I thought this thread died a while ago...*coughs*

So you've got some wheels now huh?

But who needs wheels when you have the internet? Mind you don't suppose there was an internet when this thread was started!

...and remember, pocket money doesn't go very far ^_^

The motorbike is very nice. That's the only thing about this anime that appealed to me :D .

Heh...

Pocket money goes far enough for me ;) I make it last... Though all evidence is to the contrary with this thread.

But seriously though. That was the only credible mistake I've made in quite a while... and it was made quite a while ago! lol

I've been looking into getting PM... Would you recommend it, or was, in your opinion, just a passe movie?

twas my first anime
I saw it ages ago and forgot about anime
then I had this compulsion to see it again, and the dvd release just fueled that
so I got the dvd and its fantastical (yes I needed to INVENT a word). It has the pinnacle of animation.
And the story is fast paced. Although it is a bit confusing. However I'm reading the manga now and the story is so much bigger than the movies.
*waits to get his hands on volume 6 of the manga* ^_^

Akira is an excellent movie. Especially if you can see the new dvd version of it. While the end gets a bit confusing, that's to be expected since there's alot of material in the mangas, and compressing it into a 2 hour movie is going to leave out alot of stuff.

The same guy made both PM and Spirited Away, so expect both to be great.
