View Full Version : How the hell does this work.

You know what bugs me? The fact that the macross throws away spare engines and stuff and no one has yet crashed into space debris. I mean, "Look, a fold engine, LETS DITCH IT."

You know, like they always ditch their missile pods and stuff.
Uhhh *scratches head*noo,I'm not quite sure of what you're talking about...maybe we're thinking of two different Macross series.

Year.. all that junk there must be in space... *pictures v-tech fighter craching into the Hubble Space Telescope*

He's talking about stuff like valkyries ejecting their fast packs and armor. Also all the shell casings ejected by the gun pods when they fire would be another example.
I take it that space is very big and their's plenty of room for junk like that. There's probably more junk from destroyed Regults and other Zentradi junk than the UN Spacy.
Look. Space is Big.
Really big.
Its like asking why dont all ships run into icebergs constantly.
Actually, I think it's Isamu Dyson not giving a crap about government property aside from his precious YF-19 :D

Space aint too big if you constantly ditch 50 tonnes of metal each battle. And ships don't hit icebergs because they travel too far south for the bergs to do anything.

My robot can eat your YF-19.
The Fold Engine? Ah from Mac+. For a minute I thought you were referring to the one from the Macross that dissapeared, probably through time.
You don't think that they would have crews going around picking those things up? Also that would severely limit mobility in atmosphere. Remember he was coming down to earth. Also with it on he couldn't use Guardian or Battroid modes. He had to ditch it and I'm sure something as expensive as that would be salvaged.

and all those missles flying about.... Just remember in anime space constant force = constant velocity.
And its not as if it would stay up there forever. That stuffs not in orbit. Its just floting around up there. Most of it would burn up.
Most space debre doesnt last long enough to make a difference and those that dont either: crash into a planet or sun drift away. Space is very very very very vast and you cannot compare it to an ocean. And who knows, maybe there is a trash collector guy who goes out there and collects the burned packs and repairs them, but who really want to know THAT MUCH INFO in a an anime movie or series?

Even better than the jettisoned Fold engine in Macross Plus is the magical disappearing Space Fold engines in the original SDF Macross. Use it once and bye-bye engine! Speaking of other seriously defective parts, we have the seemingly autonomous Gravity-Control engines. The suckers get fired up for the first time and immediately punch nice, big holes in the hull of the Macross as they whiz upwards through the atmosphere. Guess they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Well, considering that there's more stars and planets than space junk in the galaxy, I'd say it's safe to assume nobody takes damage from such debris. Also there are salvage teams around and with abundant resources due to planetary colonisation, such debris isn't dangerous.
UNSPACY owns/in control of so many systems in the galaxy that such small matters is hardly worth noting as rogue Zentradi fleets or Delta Wars would be a more worrying threat.

Like I said before, space is vast. I wouldn't worry about some space junk.
Well if macross plus is anything to go by the largest danger is other traffic.

Well here you have to remember this technology was all untested after assembly. The fold Engine couldn't even be explained properly by earth scientists. It dissapeared because something had been done wrong. Perhaps folding within the atmosphere caused it. It shocked the Zentraedi who were far more familiar with the act of folding. But that disaster lead to the development of the Pinpoint Barrier and later on Big Barrier systems.
The gravity engines are much easier to explain why they did what they did. Earths technology was nowhere n ear the creators of the Battle Fortress. Therefore they had to retrofit human technology into the structure. The human hull plating could not handle the massive strain of lifting the whole fortress and buckled letting the gravity engines go free. Remember they were recovered because they are seen again on the Mars landing/take off.

The scene where those engines fly off by themselves is one my funny moments of Macross. It seemed a bit corney to me, but oh well.
