What exactly is Yuyu Hakusho about?

I saw Poltergiest Report and I still have no clue what this series is about. I gather it's about people fighting threats from the spirit world but I can't figure much more than that out.

I've only read a little bit of the manga something like 8 months ago, but from what I remember ...

It's about a guy who is more or less a jerk. He beats people up, smokes, causes trouble at school, etc. Anyways, he sees this little kid about to get hit by a car, and he jumps and knocks it out of the way. He gets hit by the car and dies. Since no one in the afterlife expected him to do this, they didn't have a place prepared for him. So now he's dead, but wants to return to life, naturally. So he has to go and do stuff for the afterlife in order to earn his life back.

Uh, that's about all I can remember.

Thats about the begining, it doesn't take too long before he gets his life back. Then he becomes a detective for the spirit world and lots of stuff happen but i can't really give you spoilers. :P
