View Full Version : Dragonball Z in Australia

Dragonball Z started to air in Australia this year. It's the first time i watched DBZ and I am now a fan as well. I am an Aussie, so I will expect alot of fellow Aussies here soon as well :D
Do you think we can get the name of the Forum changed to just Dragonball? or Dragonball/Z/GT? I just think considering we have members from all across the globe I figure we should change the focus a little. In the spirit of internationalism and whatnot.
(just a minor thing. I'm pretty much stating whatever crosses my mind to get rid of this accursed "Junior Member" title)

I agree with you, but ... how would that inspire internationalism?
Yuusuke
24-06-00, 03:06 AM
Just a guess, but, Dragonball Z doesn't exist in manga. The manga was always called Dragonball, and the anime changed the title. Oh, and if it's going to be called Dragonball/Z/GT, could we exclude the GT?
I don't know, i guess there was a reason at the time
and yes it would be a lot better if GT never happened wouldn't it?

Okay change of name will be done in sec :D funny thing i just checked our old ezboard and it's down for maintenance ... just as well my new forums are up

Well. . .GT did have, um. . .
GT showed a little more of Gojita then just having him in movie 12. .
I guess that's a good thing. And Pilaf was back, heh, he was the best villain ever!

I never have gotten to see GT. What's so bad about it?
Yuusuke
24-06-00, 11:02 PM
(Hm. . .my computer restarted itself before I could hit the post button, so, I will try my best to re-write what I said)
GT was just bad :)
They broke the rules set in the previous two series.
They did things that couldn't have happened.
They added a Super Saiya-jin level that broke the rules of Super Saiya-jin levels.
There was never a manga form of it.
It was made by Toei just to 'milk' at the popularity of the Dragonball series (just like movie 11 did with Brolly).
Vegita grew a beard and cut his hair.
It was extremely short compared to the other series.
Trunks and Goten had both stopped training.
The characters were all much weaker than they should have been, imho.
(That's close enough to the original)

Oh, oops. . . heh, I feel stupid. I meant mustache, but still. I'd get a picture of it, but I don't have a digital camera and Real Player doesn't let me take snapshots right. Oh well, he does cut it off later, but his hair is still weird looking, imo.
But even still, like I said. . .
You still get to see some of Pilaf, and he was the best villain in all of Dragonball :)

Hm. . .how would I explain that. . .? Any help from anyone else on this board? I guess, in this example, ki could be defined as the inner strength and power that the person possesses. I've never really tried saying what it is in words though.
I'll pass this question since I can't clearly answer it (in a sensible way).
Sorry :(

Hm. Like Yuusuke, I'll attempt to answer this, but it's gonna sound really weird.
Ki is a creature's inner stregth, the strength possessed in their heart. It's sorta like adrenaline, from what little I know. It's the power measured by scouters. It is emitted by all living things. It is basically a measurement of the life in an object.
Alright, I understand it was a really shoddy job, but ... It's the best I can do. If it confuses you, forget it all.
Hey, Yuusuke, which episode did you get that quote from? The one in the last post?
Yuusuke
25-06-00, 12:32 AM
Hm. . .I don't know the exact number, but it was during the android saga. It was somewhere around when Vegita went Super Saiya-jin for the first time. (I'll look it up if I remember/have time)
Oh, btw, that was a pretty good job at trying to explain something like ki (without having it explained to you).

so you can defiy the laws of physics if 'you think you can'?!
okay the easiest way to put this down would be Ki = energy. Ki is what all the DB characters use for their special attacks (Kamehameha, Ki En Zan, etc.) and they also use it to fly, by sorta walking on it (i.e. focusing it beneath their feet) When anyone uses the word 'energy' in the dub, they mean 'Ki' it's relative to their power level, and can be dampened to confuse scouters.
confused yet?
GT Explained (expanding on what Yuusuke said)
Okay GT was not made by Akira Toriyama (the original creator). There is no manga of it, just the anime. It was made by Toei in an attempt to squeze a last gasp out of the Dragonball series. Of course, the writers seemed to have paid little attention to the details of the previous incarnations, and the plot gets bent, if not completely shattered. It has plot holes that you could fit an Oohzaru through. A lot of characters convieniently "dissapear" and the focus moves into outer space. Power levels aren't measured anymore, which is a good thing as they are probably registered in billions.
Biggest plot hole for me would be Planet Plant (also known as Planet Vegita) Someone please tell me how earth would not notice a freaking planet in it's orbit? Or the saiyajins wouldn't have just hopped off and beat the crap outta everyone? oi oi oi
*phew*
UNso you can defiy the laws of physics if 'you think you can'?!
well you can if you know how, just your average human doesn't know how, or knows it can be done

Hm. . .defying the law of physics? How so? :)
<rant><boredom><little_sense?>
I doubt you are meant to make sure that no laws of physics are broken in an anime with races that can regenerate whole bodies as long as their head remains intact, and fighters that can destroy planets with a hand sized ball of ki.
Just my opinion, anyways. ^_^;;
And ki, I guess (for a bit more) could probably be thought of as your spirit. I remember a little discussion (immediately banned) on the ffml that had to do with martial arts and ki/chi, which explains that you can strengthen your ki through meditation (or, as some believe, use ki to help with meditation). Also, it explained ki as being something that truly does exist (usually used as chi, is in some certain religions), ki used in martial arts to allow a person to break wood and blocks of brick with little trouble.
Hm, actually, if I remember correctly. . . I do believe that they didn't include the word 'ki' in the dubbed Dragonball Z because of religious reasons and that people may not grasp what it is.
Kinda like how they dub and subtitle Ranma, I guess? As in Ranma, any reference to ki (called chi mainly in Ranma) is changed to that of the persons battle aura (which I believe is fine).
Which also brings me to the later episodes of Dragonball Z. Up until now, FUNi has used the terms power level and energy (not much though) to refer to someones ki (actually, 'sento ryouko' are the Japanese words that they translate to power level). Anyways, I was thinking (since I have yet to see the new dubbs) how they will handle the scene in which the fighters (Gohan, et al) realise that they can't sense the ki of the androids because robots don't have ki. "Hey guys, we can't feel the power levels of the androids because they don't have energy."
And while on the subject of the FUNi dubbs, how will they fix the Bardock Special (if it's ever released). I mean, for those who have seen the Bardock Special, they know that all of the guys at the end of it were actually fighting Bardock, not trying to help him kill Freeza. Yet, in the FUNi dubbed episode (during the Freeza saga, with a flashback scene), they have Bardock yelling out "Come on men, we can take on Freeza!" (or something along those lines). Also, Bardock was not a scientist nor did he invent the technique that allows Saiya-jin to create false moons. But yet again, FUNi still messed up by having Vegita say (during first fight with Goku) "Your father may have been a low level soldier, but he was a genius scientist. . ." (He then talks about how Bardock, on some planet, thought of the way to create a false moon and helped destroy the fighters on that planet).
Whew, k, rant done. Hope that makes at least partial sense. (And no hostility meant towards anyone). Just really mad that Magus won't learn Dark Matter for another 1,000 tech points (Chrono Trigger).

I'm fairly certain that it is indeed Bardock (Goku's father). He wasn't all that powerful (a third-class Saiya-jin, like Goku) but was very brave. If, of course, I remember correctly.
Yuusuke
28-06-00, 02:20 PM
He was extremely powerful, just born as a low class soldier (he supposedly had a 10,000 powerlevel from what a scientist comments about him). I just doubt that they would have neglected to say if he did invent the technique Bardock Special. Perhaps the radiation is getting to me. Or maybe it's the watching of too much anime and the reading of too much fanfiction, the manga might be a problem too.

Remember the scene in the Freeza saga where Freeza remembers himself destroying Planet Vegita? (FUNi really screwed up that scene) Bardock died then. That was the end of the Bardock Special.

Oh, yup. The same scene was in the flashback and the end of the Bardock Special. There was also a nice scene with Bardock defeating all of Freeza's 'henchmen' to get to Freeza's ship and destroy him. I'd put together a little file with the last few minutes of the Special, but I don't know how to snip real player files (if possible) and real player doesn't let me take screenshots.

Kai, they can't wish for a badguy to die. Shenlon's (and Porunga's) wishes cannot exceed their power. For example, bringing someone back to life or taking the bombs out of androids has nothing to do with physical power. But turning an android into a human cannot be done because the android is much stronger than Shenlon. Hope that makes sense.

Well, the androids appear later in the series, and Shenlon is relatively weak (The original Piccolo could defeat him, maybe a powerlevel of about 200). Oh, and the names of the androids: Juuhachi is Japanese for 18. Juunana is Japanese for 17. gou shows that it's the number 'n' of something man-made.

Nope, just one of the rules of the Dragonballs :)
Of course, if it were the Black Star Dragonballs, then they could probably be used to wish someone dead, as they contain trememdous power.
(Probably since when living, the body contains power, but when dead, the body is empty and the soul is just returned)

N E Wayz, when do the Black Star Dragonballs appear in the show?
Yuusuke
28-06-00, 07:32 PM
Dragonball GT (another thing they messed up on, imho, will elaborate a bit).
In GT, it is found out that before Kami split into himself and the Demon King Piccolo, he created a set of Dragonballs (The Black Star). Because he was so powerful before he split (could probably destroy Freeza), the BS (heheh) Dragonballs could grant near any wish (enough power to wish a Super Saiya-jin 3 capable Goku into a kid again). Also, when the wish is made, the BS Dbs spread out throughout the galaxy, and if not found within a year, the planet Earth will blow up from their immense power.
The problems I have with this are, why did Kami keep them 'alive?' If he knew (which I believe he would have) that they could blow up the planet, he probably would have wanted to destroy them. I remember something about him forgetting about them, but how exactly do you forget about something like that? Also, why did the BS Dbs still exist after Kami refused with Piccolo (note: the Dbs of Earth 'died' when Kami refused with Piccolo).
Oh, and by alive, I mean that the Dragonballs crack (was it the BS Dbs? Can't remember), and from them, seven evil Shenlons appear.
