What does this say.

Near as I can tell, it looks like they are getting engaged or something. I can't understand the text though. I didn't see any of this happening in the anime.

The English Manga has it translated like this:

Terada- "I told the clerk that it was an engagement ring. Don't lose it until it becomes a wedding ring."

Rika- "I won't..."

I've been told that the translations are sometimes inaccurate, but I believe thats the jist of what they were saying.

it's like a promise ring promising when Rika gets older they'll get married.

It sorta goes with the theme of CCS though when you think about it. Love has no boundaries.

I know enough Chinese to say that it was a good translation(not literal) of the Japanese and the English translation provided by Mmeeva though it reversed some words to make it sound normal. Note that, the 4 Kanji in quotation marks that appear twice say "wedding ring".

This scene didn't happen in the anime but they did elude to it during the capture of The Sword and with looks in class.

I suppose it appears "gross" now by western standards but in 10 years, it won't mean squat.

I actually like the anime art of CCS more than the manga but I have to say, after reviewing my old manga and(and the new ones I d/led :) ), I have to say that Rika-chan was drawn extraordinarily beautifully in the manga. Leagues more than the anime version.

here's the literal translation:

Tereda-sensei: (I) told the clerk that I wanted to buy a wedding ring, and then (I) bought the wedding ring.

Tereda-sensei: Until it becomes an actual wedding ring, (it) should be treasured.

Rika-chan: Okay...

Chinese translations are sometimes reworded to better contextualize the situation within its culture - this means adding proverbs, or changing speech patterns to imply an emotion, etc.

Tereda-sensei is blushing, and his speech can be read to be almost bashful - his admonition to Rika-chan to treasure the ring isn't said in a way to imply his authority over her, but it's kinda like he's asking her to reciproacate his feelings by treasuring the ring.

And Rika-chan's happy agreement is like an "I will..." :)

If anyone wants, I can stick up a Japanese version. I could also stick up an English version from the Bilingual version once I get it back, too.

One suggestion on the translation provided by perched, but considering the fact that I don't know some of the characters may make this suggestion really dumb. Anyway, how about extending "should be treasured" to "should be properly treasured"?
