Well sort of.They were made after an existing mythos.
In scandinavian lore,the three sage virgins,Vadandi,Skuld and Urda stay at Urda's fountain in the realm of gods and many of those gods consult the trio.I've found this in a european religion encyclopedia but it didn't say much.I'd like to know more.
Unfortunately everytime I'd try to do a search of them on the net I only get swedish/finnish/whateverish pages.Is there a swedish OMG! fan who could tell us more?

I don't know if this is common sense but I'll just state it: I read somewhere that the creator of OMG based it havily on norse mythology. You know, you got me all hyped with the title of the thread.

You ever doubted that they were real? ;)

Here's a page with info on the Norns.
http://www.geocities.com/cas111jd/norse/norse_norns.htm
The Norns are often compared to the Greek Fates, but the Norns were more powerful, decreeing the fates of both humans and the gods themselves.
The Belldandy, Urd and Skuld of OMG retain their domains of time, and Urd and Skuld still tend Yggdrasil, but they don't have much otherwise in common with their old selves in Norse mythology. Though Belldandy is still Present, Urd is Past and Skuld is Future, they don't seem to have any duties based upon those domains.
Still, it seems that the sisters tend to be pivotal in the OMG universe. When something big happens in the manga, it usually involves one of the three directly.
There are other characters from Norse mythology in the manga.
Belldandy = Verdandi, Present "Being"
Urd = Urd, Past "Fate"
Skuld = Skuld, Future "Necessity"
Sleipnir = Sleipnir, Odin's 8-legged horse
Fenrir = Fenris, The Fenris wolf, Loki's eldest son
Midgard = Jormundgand, The Midgard serpent, Loki's youngest son
Garm = Garm, the watchdog in Nifelheim
Hild = Hel, Ruler of the dead in Nifelheim, Loki's daughter
Nidhog = Nidhog, Serpent chewing on Yggdrasil's root in Nifelheim
Other Norse Character References:
Troubadour -- Named after the wandering minstrels of northern Europe. Fits him pretty well, actually.
Peorth -- Named after a Norse rune, the 'P' symbol she uses.
Welsper -- Probably named after the Voluspa (translated = Song of Sybil), one of the oldest surviving Norse writings. Note: Welsper is pronounced as a German word, so it sounds like "velspa" in English.
NOTE: Marller/Mara has no counterpart in Norse mythology, though "mara" is a general term for "demon" in some Eastern religions.
Senbei, is a djin (genie), not a Norse character.
Hopefully that's enough to whet your appetite. There are other interesting Norse inferences, mainly concerning parentage of the three sisters in OMG, if anyone is interested.
edit: I always forget about Garm, for some reason. :heh:

Wow, that's pretty exciting.
So OMG did a better job with Norse mythology than Zena Warror Princess did.
:lol:

Thank you WelspertheCat for this enlightening post :)
Wow,this makes the series more interesting now.Although the Norns of time are nothing like our beloved goddesses it's still fun to know where their story comes from :)
PS:Zena and Hercule were both jokes that ruined the whole greek fantasy world.They both sucked
I've always found it fun how OMG's so heavily based on Norse mythology.. I actually tend to laugh my head of everytime the names shows up in my school books :sweatdrop.
---- Icky facts from Norse mythology:
Loki (Loke)'s supposed to be both the mother AND the father of Sleipnir.. or it was just the mother, I can't remember which of those *blinks*.

I'll bet OMG takes on a whole new slant when it's your own mythology it's based upon! :)
Loki is Sleipnir's mother. :heh: It's your typical "Loki bails the lazy Aesir (Norse gods) out of a sticky situation" story. After the Vanir (other gods, not much known about them) nearly kicked the tails of the Aesir (would have, too, but the Vanir were honorable and gullible and got swindled by the Aesir), the Aesir decided they needed a stone wall around Asgard. Being too lazy to build it themselves, they enlisted a Frost Giant to do so, provided he could build it within a certain time frame. I can't remember what they agreed to pay, but when it looked like Mr. Frost Giant was going to finish on time, the Aesir didn't want to pay and so Loki came to the rescue, taking the form of a very attractive filly and lured away the Frost Giant's stallion work horse. Apparently Loki was very good at entertaining said stallion, because not long afterward Sleipnir was born. :heh:
Hey, don't look at me like that! I didn't write the story! :dodgy:
Lately, I've noticed that some pagans are fitting Fujishima's reincarnated Norns into their own pantheons. Now that's something I wasn't expecting!

I thought this was common knowledge? No I'm not boasting :D
It's just i'm sure the creator of the manga and anime mentioned this a few times already?
