I know what you mean. In the local dub in my country, they initially thought Kurama was a girl too. They gave him the name Denise. However, when the series progressed, it was obvious to everyone that he really wasn't a girl so they changed the name to Dennis.
Yes, they liked to change character names of anime where I'm from so people can relate to them better. They don't do that too often anymore.

philippines i assume? the local dub was tight man! i still have some taped copies after toguro was defeated, now i wont assume youre filipino, but ill put a line from the philippine dub:

It's not Yugin.. it was Eugene. I liked the Philippine dub... except for the announcer cat girl. Her voice was too high pitched to begin with... shudder*
