The Japanese Verses The American
Names that is… We could talk about all the other differences between them… But WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR RATIONAL DISCUSTIONS! Best off to fence these conversation into sections and divide and conquer…
First up… Names… I had a list somewhere with the differences of the names and how they impacted the story line… But I lost it… :heh:
Anyway, I know almost all the names where changed except for Li, Keroberos, Meilin and Sakura's… Well… No last name was left intact… But do the American name's hold any significance? Or what?
the only significance between the two is their first names
here's a list of CCS original japanese names and their american ver. Sakura Kinimoto - Sakura Avalon Tomoyo Daidouji - Madison Tayler Li Syaoran - Li Showran Touya Kinimoto - Tori Avalon Yukito Tsukishiro - Julian Star Kaho Mizuki - Ms. Mikenzi Eriol Hiiregasawa - Eric Moon (i think) Clow Reed - Clow Reed (Clow pronounced as Klaw)
this only a part of the list...i forgot the american names of other characters like... Rika Chiharu Naoko Li Meiling Tarada-sensei others ( :heh: )
They sound like they came from a cheap Soap Opera. ^^;;

erminology/Names and Pronunciation Changes
The pronounciation of "Clow" changed. Originally, Clow rhymed with "Go" or "Oh", not "Cow."
"Sakura Kinomoto" was changed to "Sakura Avalon", and Sakura is now pronounced "suh-KOOH-ra." When pronouncing Japanese names, no syllables are supposed to be stressed. That can be a little hard for some native English speakers, so instead the first syllable can be stressed for nearly the same effect.
"Shaoran Li" was changed to "Li Showron". His given and family name were switched, the spelling of his family name was changed, and is now pronounced differently. Pronounciation should be "Shau-ran" (Shau rhyming with "now").
Despite what Nelvana tried to tell you on their website, Kero-chan's original name was not "Keroberos". The literal transliteration is "Keruberosu". A suitable English transliteration would even be "Kerberos," but this word is actually the Japanese transliteration of "Cerberus." Also, the pronunciation is now "Key-roh" instead of "Keh-ro".
"Tomoyo Daidouji" was changed to "Madison Taylor". (You can feel the valley girl accent just from the name alone, can't you?)
"Touya Kinomoto" was changed to "Tori Avalon". (Tori? No comment. That's just too screwed up. And to think, you're supposed to believe he isn't gay.)
"Yukito Tsukishiro" was changed to "Julian Star".
"Mei-ling Li" was changed to "Meilin Rae".
"Fujitaka Kinomoto" was changed to "Aiden Avalon". (Aiden? Who thought of these names, type-writing monkeys on an LSD trip?)
"Nadeshiko Kinomoto" was changed to "Natasha Avalon". (Sounds like a Russian spy, doesn't it?)
"Kaho Mizuki" was changed to "Layla Mackenzie".
"Rika" was changed to "Rita". (Yes! They replaced an entire letter. Apperantly, this makes it easier for English-speaking children to understand.)
"Naoko" was changed to "Nikki". (Nikki, by the way, was originally supposed to be Sakura's name in Cardcaptors. I believe Nelvana decided to keep Sakura after the fifth or so Molotov cocktail they received from angry fans.)
"Chiharu" was changed to "Chelsea".
"Takashi" was changed to "Zachary".
i would think the American names hold *some* significance because the japanese - english meanings of the names don't hold anything in the English lang.
I mean you wouldn't say Sakura - Cherry Blossum sure we called people Rose and soforth, but we don't call people Cherry Blossum.
Likewise for japanese if they would EVER translate a Amerian cartoon where the person was named 'Guy' (Its a name you know) i'm *quite* sure they would so careless as just to be a katakana translation of 'Gairu'. (mabey they would, so don't quote me)
^_^
hai hai
you're right on that one...
I still think they stole the names from some loser cartoon. Maybe from Jem and the Holograms or something.

If you think the american dub was bad, look at the french dub!
Sakura Kinomoto : Sakura Gauthier
Kerberos : Kero Vero
Tomoyo Daiji : Tiphanie
Toya Kinomoto : Thomas Gauthier
Fujitaka Kinomoto : Dominique Gauthier
Nadeshiko Kinomoto : Nathalie Gauthier
Yukito Tsukishiro : Mathieu
Li Shaolan : Lionnel
Meiling Li : Stéphanie
Naoko : Nadine
Rika : Sonia
Kaho Mitsuki : Mademoiselle Katia Moreau
Monsieur Kurumada : Monsieur Terada.
Notice how many characters don't even have a family name.Someone must've thought they were all orphans...
I have a grandfather named Lionnel,so it's weird to see a 12 year old boy in an anime with the same name.

Whoa, and I thought the English translated names were bad... those French names are a bit more messed up. Did CCS get translated into any other languages besides english and french? Actually, didn't CCS get translated into Spanish? **thinks it over**
HOE!!!
French names are much worse that their American counterparts...

I concur with your HOE. Those names are strange. What's a Gauthier? Is it yummy?

I'm still trying to rationalize "Tori" for Touya ._.; I admit the French are worse, but I'd rather have Thomas than Tori >.<;;;;
