Noticed a cute garage kit on EBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1677893793
What other sorts of garage kits are out there.
I withstood this temptation. Don't know if I could resist Skuld though

If you do a search for "Resin kit" on ebay, you'll find many different Garage kits for many series.
Be warned, however, that most of these are Re-casts (copies of the original) and tend to be of only fair quality. Also some of the PVC and Vinyl kits are VERY nice.
You might also try:
hobbylink Japan (mostly original Kits)
VOE.com for pretty rare anime GK's (Garage kits)
hobbyfan.com (seems to be an mix of original and Recasts)
Megawish.net (Recasts but quality varies wildly)
For more, either search the internet or shoot me an e-mail and I'll try to help.

SFoM... think of them as Statues that you have to paint. Except its a lot harder then you'd think. :heh:

That particular kit really captured the essence of Belldandy. The Skuld kits I've seen so far have been a bit contrived.
Don't really have time to do them, or space to display them. But, once in a while I like to admire the rare ones that are special.

There are literally tens of thousands of people who sculpt, manufacture and paint these kits. As a rule, if you are a halfway decent artists, you can paint one. It just takes practice. Think of it as painting in 3D. If you start out with an easy one, you'll find it enjoyable and satisfying when you're finished.

I use pictures floating around the internet for the most part I don't have a decent digital camera.
:heh:
I have all but the Skuld w/hammer ones. (Those are really hard to find!!)
I have built the Belldandy Millieum (Breathtaking) I plan to show it sometime at a con)
The one on the crane (Took 3 months to finish, 10 seconds to sell!)
Skuld and Nobel Scarlett is under construction.
I have 3 requests for HolyBell (2 are finished and have been shipped, a third is under construction. (The angels are the most requested so far.)
I have done some 30 kits over the last 5 years. All but one were requests from friends/relatives/people with weapons demanding them.
I recently went on another 40+ kit buying binge to bolster my collection again (these I'm keeping)

twc,
Wow, that's impressive. So, you have a hobby/business then constructing garage kits then?
I've done a little bit of painting of stuff and am really curious how they get the finishes on those photos. Masking and air brush could do it, but how can one mask such a small area?
P.S.
Have you ever seen Otaku no Video, the part where they interview the garage kit fanatic?
tfcreate
01-01-02, 02:06 AM
Actually, most of the kits you see are done either all or in part by hand brushing. It's really the only way to finish a model.
I airbrush the larger areas and hand paint the rest.
Airbrushing can be pretty messy and a big bother, but the results are well worth it.
The masking is pretty easy. I just use the tape used for large bangages. It's flexible enough to get into the tight areas and comes off easy. For most other areas I use a liquid rubber mask. One is called "Liquid Friskett." I can paint that on, allow it to dry then just paint away. One problem i run into is brush strokes in the painted surface. A retarder mixed into the paint will slow the drying time enough to eliminate the brush strokes.
I then let the models (usually several at a time) dry. I have a dust proof cabinet that forces air across the drying models.
Everybody says how hard it is to do these models, but the toughest part is doing the eyes. (Can you imagine Urd, crosseyed? I blew it once and did just that....) The face and eyes usually take the longest.
TFC
:)
Wow, those look really beautiful.
Outta curiousity, how much does a well painted model sell for? Prolly a pretty penny considering the amount of effort that goes into 'em. It all kinda reminds me of Warhammer with the amount of detail and painting. :D
tfcreate
01-01-02, 04:05 AM
The amount for kits vary pretty widely. I've seen them for as little as $40 dollars(US) or as much as $1500(US) The later was for a Gundam model, custom painted and one-of-a-kind. The popularity and rarity, obviously determine it's value, as well as weather or not it's an original or a recast (copy). Mine average (unpainted) around $45. When completed around $75.
Originals tend to be of better quality.
If your wondering, the kits I'm doing now are for my own display. It took me nearly a year to get fill all of the requests I had last year so aside from family, I don't do them for others anymore. It's too time consuming.
E-Bay U-bid and some of the Specialty shops on the internet have them for sale, and they are excellent.

That is one of the more popular of the Belldandy/Hollybell castings. If it's one of the originals, then it's pretty valueable.
There was a limited run of that series, but unfortunately there are recasts floating around now. I've only seen one completed and it was fantastic!!

There are usually several Garage/Resin kit sellers at the cons.
House of Anime (http://www.houseofanime.com) was at ACEN over the last few years and had a LARGE selection of kits. There were others there who displayed the ones that they had completed. It may be well worth going to a con or two in order to see how the pros do their kits. It's also a chance to trade secrets and ideas.

How many booths at AWA were their selling resin kits though? Cuz last couple of cons I went to all the dealers cut zero slack when it came to prices on resin kits.

I tend to restrict my kit purchases to on-line or via mail. Some (not all) of the dealers use the Cons as an excuse to gouge the con goers. I'll buy one if I know it's rare or unavilable someplace else. I had to pay $60 bucks for a Mand Maid May last year.

I'm thinking of getting one of these kits in the future but i'm not too sure on what type of paint to use. Any suggestions? One more thing, when you're paint things like hair or clothing do you paint with solid-colors or do you use different shades?
tfcreate
10-12-02, 08:42 PM
I use mainly acrylics, but there are many types and brands of paint. Some people prefer oils because they blend well but take a long time to dry On that kit, I used artists inks to get the shading affect. Like most types of paints, the colours don't quite look the way you want, to mixing the coluors is prefered rather than trying to find the right commerically available colours. For example in the model you showed, the hair alone has about 8 different shades.
There are technique called washing and dry-brushing that is used to achieve the shading affects. It takes alittle practice, but after awhile, you'd be amazed at the types of affects you will get.
This link is to a page of modelers that I subscribe. Some really talented people hang out there. Some are new to modeling, many more have been doing it for years. It's loaded with hints and tips and have helped me out alot.
e2046.com (http://www.forum.e2046.com/index.php) Good luck. Any more questions, give me an e-mail or a p.m.
