Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I'm gonna have to say Escaflowne. I LOVE the mecha animation. Only reason I watch it. :D

Blue Sub 6's CG is amazing, the character animations are just OK though, but hte best I would have to say is the RRK OVAs

the RRK OAVs are definatly one of the best. My runner up would have to be Lain (especially on DVD, whew). I like how they can mix both the wired and the animation fluidly (and I love how Lain's room looks! I wish I had a pool cooling my computer ;-)

I would have to say Lain
then GITS...

But I have only limited Anime knowledge...

But I will make a note of the BEST scene of animation... would be in EVA epsiode 10 I think... "Dance Like u Want to Win" where Asuka and Shinji are fighting to the music and they show an AWESOME shot where Asuka, Shinji and Unit01, 02 are sort of flashing rapidly to form one image as the atacked the angel... it was incredible... I think it will be a long time before I see a better shot than that!

I'd say Mononoke Hime (but i'm a bit biased :B: since its my fave movie)

Here we go:-

1.Akira - Old but still has the best human movement in any anime.
2.Princess Mononoke - Alone, the visuals in this movie are enough to please anyone.
3-10(in no order, just animated well)
Grave of the Fireflies
End of Evangelion
Porco Rosso
Wings of Honneamise
Kiki's Delivery Service
Laputa
Nausicaa
Spriggan(crap story, good animated fight scenes)

Blue Subs CG was awsome but the Character animation to me want that great.. It seemed very undetailed but it might have just been in contrast to the CG

Obviously everything by Ghibli has totally superior animation, and most of Akira totally rocks. Ghost in the shell is good, but one that most people have overlooked is Perfect Blue...some of the animation is absolutely awesome.

I've not yet seen Perfect Blue so i can't comment, but it seems very good.

2. Nausicaa, Valley of the winds (so sad :()

3. Princess Mononoke

4. Evangelion the TV series (iunno about the movie...it was kinda depressing...etc...etc...)

I like some of the animation stuff from Ranma.
A lot of the anime I've seen thus far tho hasn't been too different from each other (I aint seen much tho)
Animation from things like 'Roujin-Z' I don't like too much tho, both it and the first Bubblegum Crisis episode, where ya get heaps of machinery fusing, it just looks ugly and stupid. Evangelion did some nice fusing though.
