My friend let me borrow his Nadescio tapes and I loved it! My fav char is Ruri (baka). But anyway, did anyone eles notice a strange resemblence to Eva? Maybe that was partially a reason that I liked it so much, but I picked out alot of things in common. Did anyone eles?

it's one of my all time favs. it's got humour, wierd stuff, etc, but get's a little more serious at the end. the movie is awesome too, albeit a little dark.

well, i kinda thought bakabaka lady was like Rei from Eva, but later on, you discover RuriRuri is a little more emotional than Rei is. As for the Asteavalis (sp?), they kinda look like the Evas (IMO). Other than that, eva is more dark than nadesico is ... umm ... i can't see many other parallels ... maybe besides that fact that shinji and akito have moral problems with fighting ...

I think the show was kind of a parody of Evangelion and other series like it. I love the review episode where the anime characters from Gekiganger (I know, it's confusing) are watching Nadesico. I think it's one of the funniest series I have seen.

Nadesico is one of my fav series of all time, yeah it was intended as a big poke at all of the Mecha Anime series like Macross/Gundam/Eva

Nadesico is more comedy driven. It is taking off mecha anime cliches, e.g. ultimate attacks, shouting your attack:'Gekigan Flare!!!', dying heroically etc. It is taking off Anime like Voltron, Gatchaman etc. Eva is not everyday mecha anime and it came out around the same time as Nadesico.

There is a lot of quirky characters who take up the dialogue when their expertise is needed. Gai, Uri P, Inez, Ruri-chan and that dude with the glasses and moustache (Can't remember their names theres too many), all chip in with funny comments.

I don't see any resemblense to Eva except that it often has a message beneath the surface like Eva. It's usually more obvious though. It's funny, but has feeling.

'maybe besides that fact that shinji and akito have moral problems with fighting ...'-LP Yeah that's a definate similarity.

I agree, it is not easy to compare Eva and Nadesico, the only real similarity is big robots/humanoid weapons. But, they are both in my Top 5 series....

There's no doubt about it, folks; Nadesico rocks BIG TIME. I thought it was like a parody... but I noticed that half of the humour doesn't come from parody at all, but is purely original. For example, Ruri babbling about kinetic potential energy in a video made for kids, or Uribatake's disturbing 'activities' involving stuffed toys.

And another thing... I think I'm one of only three or four people in the world who likes a character MORE than Ruri! *gasp* *shock horror*! My fave character was Gai, but... for those of you who've seen past vol. 1 (not much of a spoiler), you'll know why he can't be active in the series anymore. Now, my fave is probably Megumi or Yurika. Sorry, I meant to quote my non-sexual favourite... ;) Probably Uribatake or one of the three loopy pilots, then.

And Liquid Snake, if you're reading this, have you found any MGS avatars here? If there aren't, does anybody thing there should be some?

i was laughing my ass off when Akito and Gai were both crying watching one of the Gekigangar episodes

Nadesico is an anime about loving anime, cleverly disguised (and is working well as) an entertaining sci-fi adventure story. The hero watches the anime Gekiganger all the time (with clips of said anime all throughout). One major character onboard the ship is a seiyuu (anime voice actor) before she came on board the battleship. The engineer is an obsessed model and diorama creator. And to top it off, there is an entire colony of Gekiganger lovers who literally follow the anime religiously. ("We managed to find the legendary lost episodes 9 and 33!") You can't help but learn a thing or two about being an otaku (anime fanatic) watching this stuff, and if you already are an otaku, you can't help but laugh as the anime gives a couple of winks to all the anime fans.

you gotta love this show.

see you space cowboys.

Yup, when they had that "Gekiganga-thon" in episode 22 or so, a person at the Melbourne University Nadessico Marathon in November 2000 promptly jumped up and shouted "Oh, I'm so ashamed!!"

The parralell to real life and fiction is unnervingly funny indeed.

Hehe Ronin I think I was there :) I go to quite a few of the Melbourne Uni Shindigs. Nadesicos a truly great series, everyone see it and YES!!! my Volume 2 DVDs in the mail!

Of course, the drama in the series, while not as dominant as the humour early on, is stunning aswell. Does anyone remember that bit at the end of episode 6, with the decision that Yurika had to make?

It was a decision between putting up the shields to save the ship, but crushing the Mars survivors in the process, or not putting up the shields and most probably dying, but letting the Mars survivors live. The silent moment in that scene was used to wonderful effect. Of course, the series picked up it's humour after Yurika's vomiting session, as usual.

No doubt about it, Nadesico is GREAT stuff! :D

**Spoilers**

Nadesico is right up under Evangelion in my book, but it could tie it once I see the rest of the episodes (I've only seen through ep 10 so far :(). It has some of the best comedy mixed with some of the best drama I've ever seen in an anime (or anywhere else for that matter). I think someone already mentioned the scene where they have to decide if they should lift off and crush the survivors on Mars or not.... very heavy. My favorite lines so far:

(Episode 1) Yurica: You love me! Akito: I didn't say- Yurika interupting: You really really love me!! Akito: AGGGHHH!!!!

(can't remember the episode) Yurika: So many funerals.....

(Episode 1, and pretty much every episode after) Ruri: so many idiots....

Nadesico is definitely one of my favorites. I just hope that it has a better ending than Evangelion (yeah, I said it!! :))

nadesico is truly one great show. when it comes to comparing it with eva, there is that one ep. in vol. 7 (ADV release) that pokes fun at a lot of eva stuff. I laughed my ass off.

well i JUST got back from watching nadesico about 5 min ago. i dont remember what episode im on but i definately am pissed that Gai died so quickly. he was my favorite character damnit! anyway i think nadesico does have this sort of "feeling" that eva did. i mean you really cant compare all that much to the two but its something about their auras that are just similar. plus if you have seen the dubbed shinjis voice actor does akito. are any other voice actors from eva in nadesico? i think ryoko is asukas voice but i cant really make out any more

Yeah Gai's death really surprises people, he's also one of my favourite characters in the series. Gai always was energetic compared to the rest of the crew and was the funniests. His death was surprising and sudden at ep 3!!

Ura

Yeah, I loved his crayon battle plans and the way he requested the heavy arms Aestivalis "Professor, send the heavy space ganger type" but he died :(

Maguamaru

Yes, Tiffany Grant (dub Asuka) played Ryoko in the dub, and Spike Spencer (Shinji) was indeed Akito. Too bad Tristan MacAvery (Gendo and millions of other roles in ADV dubs) wasn't in ADV when they dubbed that one...

Gai was a brilliant character, but I think they killed him off so early so that they could utilize the effects memories of him would have on Akito.
Actually, that spawned one of the best and least predictable lines in volume 3... where Yurika, Akito and Megumi were all in the Aestovalis and it looked like they were going to die:
Akito: (to Nagare) "I came back because I've found something worth fighting for..."
Yurika and Megumi look at Akito in a 'charmed' manner.
Akito: "... Gai!"
The looks on their faces were great. :D

And while I'm on about scenes... does anyone remember the scene in episode 7 where Uribatake was all alone in his room, watching Yurika and Ruri on a screen... and what was suggested there... I take it everyone got the same hint? Come on, people, the look in his eyes and the way he was scrumpling that tissue thing... *shudders*...
So, place your bets! Uribatake fancies:
A - Yurika
or
B - Ruri (Jesus... not lolita complex too?)
Well? :D

I just started watching Nadesico a couple of days ago, and on the first tape, I was laughing my ass off. My mom was getting annoyed about all the loud japanese spreading around the house. I found it funny about Yurika, seeing how she's a bit like Miaka in Fushigi Yugi, boy crazy and childish.

Ruri is my absolute favorite character. Baka. I like it when there's a scene when the character acts stupid and she cuts in saying "baka". And being only 12 and incredibly intelligent is really impressive also. At first I also thought she was like Rei, but more emotional and stuff. And funnier.

I agree with DrZepp, I was also really discouraged that Gai died so quickly at the end of tape one. But I was cracking up about it because when they shot him he just fell over like a tree. Kerr-plunk. Then I realized what just happened.

This is such a funny series, people who haven't seen it have got to watch it. Its one of my favorites!

gai dead was tragic he didn't die the way he wanted, in a glorious battle, instead he was shot in some dark shuttle room

Question time. Bosan(sp?) jumping sends AKito back in time. Yurika doesnt remeber Akito kissing her, but he remembers doing it. Also Yurika has something to do with Akito's abiltiy to bosan jump. In the first tape when Akito bosan jumps of Mars Yurikas face quickly appears on screen. so did Akito bosan jump when he was a kid, why doesnt yurika remember Akito kissing her? Why? Does bosan jumping have something to do with it?

how many episodes are in nadesico?
i have been getting them on vhs and i have 6 videos (i think 2 episodes are on each tape) i know video 7 and 8 are out but i was hoping that it would be longer than that. i think i get too attached to the characters in any anime series, so i need to see the rest.

Commander. In relation to your question, you haven't seen the whole series yet have you? I won't explain it here as it would contain massive spoilers but the whole explanation of manned Boson Jumps comes in during the last few eps.

EDIT: Yup 26 great episodes and one average movie. Honestly even after seeing the series again I couldn't see how the movie was a continuation of the series. Maybe after a few OAVs then the movie would be OK. It was so dark

Of course the movie was a continuation...Ruri as Captain :D

I thought Prince of Darkness excellent. I usually find after a movie made after a series usually spoils everything, but not with Nadesico (or Evangelion, and hopefully not Cowboy Bebop)

I thought that it was a good movie, just not like Nadesico. I had a hard time working out who the characters like Lapis were. There was no development and why were Yurika and Akito kidnapped? Yes, Ruri as captain made it all worth it but it was this side that I couldn't follow

the jupitor guys are trying to revolt, so they capture all the A class boson jumpers on the earth's side eg, Akito, Yurika, and capture the boson jump black box

Lapis, like Ruri was genetically engineered, how she is with akito, who knows possibly becuase of negul, since Akito's senses are messed up he needs he to well be his senses. Also she is the pilot of AKito's battle ship, cool.

*Phew*! Many thanks to everyone for stating when there were spoilers in their posts. I'd be screwed otherwise! :D

Too bad we're only up to vol. 3 in England. All these freakin' game and anime companies treat us in the UK as a joke, I tell you. We get everything later than the USA guys, and we only get HALF the pick, if that! I imagine it's much the same for Australia, and even WORSE for some other countries... although I hear Spain and Italy are pretty well stocked.

Commander Fuyutsuki

I'd have to say thats not true. 'Bout Australlia. Some members from Australlia have discussed anime movies I've never heard of and wasn't able to find in my big book of anime.

Maguamaru

Well, in that case that's a pleasant surprise! Maybe big, evil American companies do take other countries seriously! :D

Ohhhhh, Nadesico.

This was one of the greatest series' I ever watched... and I put it on equal ground with Eva as my top anime.

SPOILER!!!!!!

My only regret was that it actually resembled Eva in one terrible way. And that was how it ended. The last episode was sooo completely incoherent to me, it wasn't till I looked around a few review sites that I figured out what happened. Then I watched Prince of Darkness, and while impressed, felt it was not at all like the series... Ruri² was all too serious and "grown up", Tenkawa and Yurika starred in all of about 10 mins of it, and it took me half an hour just to realise that Lapis WAS NOT Megumi (the quality of the fansub was not super great... not bad, but not great). Although the movie was great as a movie (very sad, I got all choked up a few times), it was not sooo great as a Nadesico finale. I wished they'd have brought out a second movie, but then, what would they have put in it?

Draco

Yeah, Prince of Darkness is a bit out there for Nadesico. And no Yurika, Hardly any Tenkawa and NO GEKIGANGER!!!!!! Not even some gekigan types. It was good to see some of the old characters again though, like Ryoko and Hikaru

I only ended up watching the first two videos, because I was too mad about Gai's death to go on. Also because it got a little less funny, and that's more of what I like in anime. The beggining song is really cool though.

I still love the series, even without Gai. It's things like 'Nazi Nani Nadesico' and Uribatake's little... pleasuring... when Yurika and Ruri were on TV that keep it just as funny for me. :)
