Artbooks

so i've been wanting to improve a FLCL art style, but i don't know which of the Artbooks i should get, as i've seen two on AnimeNation, and nowhere on the Wired can i find descriptions well enough to give me a better idea on which contains the better/more pictures.

can anyone help me out here?

There's a groundworks of FLCl art book that you can pick up at konikoniya. The one we bought at tokyo town is about $40 dollars... (Ask baka yellercrakka for wasting money...) It has concept art, (canti was originally intended to be human... gasp*) inspirational art, naota's brother, cut out scenes, planned scenes... really nice book. ^^

The book i'm referring to has pictures plastered all over the place so i guess its well worth getting. I'd need to get the title off mantis and yeller to find out which is which.

Ive done my share of looking for flcl books and all i have managed to find are what you have found on animenation H.H.....

I own the Groundworks book myself so i am much more partial to it than the ism...
So the best person you could talk to about this that i know of is crakka... since he owns them both...
however....
this is basicaly what i do know...

Ism

Cons-
-too short (100 pages at the most..)
-some questionable artwork among the beautifull (peices done by various people....)
-lots of japanese text (from what i remember)
-50 fricking dollars....
-the plastic cover has had ink printed on top of it making it stink and anoy at the same time (thats japanese inginutity for ya)....

Pros-
-almost entirely in color,...
-almost every picture that i saw of it i had never scene before...(and i have scoured the web for flcl pictures)
-character designs
-sadamato's art...
-two art books in one...(one half is full of poster type quality images aranged front to back about 50 pages,... the other half is the concept stuff plus text of all the flcl questions and secrets revealed....in japanese of course)
-High quality paper
-The irritiating smell of the plastic cover will probably eventualy get you high while you look through it.... giving you the true FLCL "cracked out experience"..

Groundworks

Cons-
-skips some of the better fight scenes entirely... (esp. the giant hand with the shot gun -_-)
-50 frickin dollars...
-lack of censoring of things that damn well should be censored...( Naotas dads flailing libido for one.... )
-Only one book unlike the 5 eva groundworks books... so they skip quite a bit...
-regular stock paper pages.... (besides the colored)

Pros-
-Sixteen full paged color pictures (9 done by sadamato!)
-its big... (190 some odd pages of the most beautifull pencil work ive ever seen... all used in the final anime)
-besides some of the aforementioned fight scenes.... some of the greater moments of the show are shown...
-Japanese dvd cover art is shown at the end as a nice little bonus
-the page layout of the pencil sketches... (they definitely gave you the most bang for the page)

anyway thats about it.... after all that i just reccomend you by them both... since there both worth it.... but personly i would say get groundworks first.

*looks around* uhhh... yes, I do tend to get kinda fanatical when I see FLCL merch. I have both art books... the ground works is the better of the two... it's not partly printed on plastic that smells so bad it gives you a headache like the other one. but it also has the animation stuff... and the other has concepts. the ism book is neat cause of the funny consepts... the one with the TV pig is the coolest!

yeah, i need to make alot of shirts... a BeBop one, Lain one {made one once, but i ruined it -_-}, FLCL...

i don't know what design i'd go with for the FLCL one though, but not the P!... i think i'll have to make a general FLCL shirt and also make me a Mamimi shirt too... in fact, i think Canti should have his own shirt as well. :D
