What genre is Noir?

I have heard bits and pieces about Noir in my experiences with anime in the past. However, I don't know anything about it other than the fact that it is a TV broadcast 26 episode series.

What is the basic plot (no spoilers, please) of the story, what is the setting for the series (time, place, etc.), and what are the characters like? I'd say the series is pretty good considering that it got a discussion forum here on the boards. Hence, it must have a lot of people who want to talk about it, and thus a large fan base, meaning it probably doesn't suck donkey toes :p.

At any rate, any info would be greatly appreciated. I am always on the lookout for cool anime series, and if Noir is good then I will probably check it out.

Not quite Gothic per se , rather I would call it:

Film Noir/Heroic-Bloodshed.

The Film Noir aspect concerns the darkness of the criminal underworld.

The Heroic-Bloodshed genre concerning themes of honor, justice, morality, brotherhood, and high octane gunfights that would make John Woo proud.
