Nope. Basically, a ghost is a soul.
People like Kusanagi who are almost completely cyborgs would be robots if not for their ghost.
In the GitS storyline, AIs advanced enough to easily pass a Turing test are commonplace, and the only thing that differentiates them from humans is their lack of a ghost.
A ghost is the only phenomenon humans have not yet been able to produce artificially.

GitS isn't really that weird, but if you were only half watching it would appear complicated.
(Now try watching Furi Kuri at a distance where you miss half the text! That is weird! I don't think one can make sense of it before watching the third time in slow motion ^_^ )

On the subject of GitS, I would heartily recommend the Manga version. It cuts down a bit on the serious philosophical angle and adds a good dose of the excellent Shirow humor. Definitely worth a read!

Okay. I think I get you.
And the puppet master was just AI with no ghost. One more question, what the hell are they on about at the end where he says he want to be on with her. My guess is that he wants a soul and he needs to merge with her to get her soul...am I even in the ball park?

It is some time since I saw it, so my knowledge on this may be a bit rusty. But if I remember it right, it goes like this:

The Puppetmaster wants to merge with Kusanagi not just to become 'human' (as in have a ghost), but to actually transcend humans. The merger should produce a new entity with the best of both worlds, a sort of ghost living breathing and being the internet.
(Imagine if the enormous amounts of information on the net was a part of you and your instinctual knowledge, if all the machines making up the net were merely an instinctively controlled part of you like your hands are now. I think I can see where the Puppetmaster is going....)

Alright. I gotcha. That puppetmaster is a pretty clever guy.
I'll have to get the video out again now that I understand it.
Thanks

Oooo...Ghost in a shell the second.
I gotta see that. Is it coming out in Japan or worldwide in 2003?

Better yet, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface manga, coming later this year from Dark Horse. And a series, although I don't have a date on that. Probably early 2003, though.
