Full Metal Panic is the latest offering from Gonzo studios makers of such animes as

First off the the graphics and animation are great, with the Arm Slaves rendered in CG and looking quite realistic and cool. Think Vandread but with a heavier emphasis on realism and less cartoony looks. The detail on (for example) the hind helipcopter was extremely well done.

The Music seems to be quite good and the opening song tomorrow is quite catchy.

The show is an action/comedy/drama show with it mainly being comedy so far in the first two episodes. The mechas are called Arm Slaves in this and the pilots are in an organization called Mythirl which is supposively ten years ahead of the armies of the world.

Heres an official description
It is a story in the world which is only a little different from our world. The Soviet Union and KGB still exist there, and Arm Slave ( armored mobile master slave system ) has been put to practical use. Sosuke Sagara is an elite soldier who belongs to the strongest special-forces "Mithril" in the world. As a new duty, he is ordered to guard the girl named Kaname Chidori who goes to the high school in Japan. At once, he came to her high school as a transfer student for the duty accomplishment. However, he who is accustomed to the war is considered to be an odd person in peaceful Japan. The more he makes an effort, the more it fails. On the other hand, the organization which is active behind the scenes to plunder Kaname appears.

This anime seems to have made an impression over the irc chat rooms and should be a title to look out for in the future and I think it has the chance to become bigger than vandread was last year but not as popular as noir.

Check it out you won't be disappointed (well shouldn't be) and if you like gonzo animes you will like this. The digi subs are great quality too (too good for tape) and it's currently upto episode 2 with ep 3 coming out likely around the 28th of this month.

ive seen it and i love it :D ive rewatched episodes 1 and 2 so many times to see sagara screw up :lol: i love it and also i love how gonzo is involved with the mech design. i love mechs and this anime has me hooked wanting to see more action. i like the mech design, it just kicks ass :D

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the series even after one ep. The cG is very nice and it's pretty hilarious, althought the beginning scene gave promise to some great action in the future. GONZO is quickly becoming one of my fav anime studios.

I also love this anime and have seen eps 1 and 2 at least 3 times!

The trailer (which i now have a dvd rip version of) i've watched over 20 times and I really want the manga too!

The next ep will seem to continue along the lines of the first two (thats good because it is quite funny) but from the episode titles for eps 4+ this will be picking up soon.

Does anyone else think theirs going to be a love triangle between Sagara, Kaname and Theresa (The captain of the submarine)?

Just saw the second ep today. Very funny. You would think that Sagara could be a little more inconspicuous in following Kana, especially since he's an elite soldier. Oh well, his screwups are hilarious enough, so I'll overlook it.

There's gotta be a future love triangle between Sagara, Kana, and Teresa Testarossa. It's gonna be great, since Sagara is so clueless.

Nah, I don't think that red headed girl is the captain. You see in episode 2 that Teresa is the captain. She's in the sub and you can see her shoulderboards which have four stripes on them. The redhead was probably someone that Mithril had to protect for the Whisper project or whatever it is.

Side note: Episode 3 is out. An op in my fav hub has it, but she's not sharing it...

I thought ep 3 was already done but released is a different story, in (Af) they alreay had 3 new releases yesterday by (anbu) which were Love Hina Again OVA 01, 7 of Seven or something ep 01 and something else. The main distro of the channel was already crashing alot because of how popular love hina again is proving to be

Expect ep 03 to be publicly released in the next few days or in 5 days together with ep 04

Though i don't know what excuse ai and hqa have for not releasing it

Expect the whisper thing to be explained a bit in ep 05 since it's called whisper something

Possible cause on why they haven't released it - From what I've heard, ADV announced yesterday that they licensed Full Metal Panic for US release. Given their record, expect it sometime after the sun burns out.

They are still serving full metal panic eps 1 and 2 in the channel i'm in and no licensed anime is allowed in it so it's not licensed yet.

It's good in one way that it has a chance of getting to australia

It's bad in that adv's dub team suck, they are really slow in releasing stuff (wheres the nadesico movie and excel saga -------)

Personally I want pioneer to get it, if not them bandai or mediablasters.

Another thing to consider is that Pioneer have every gonzo anime except for blue sub #6

They have

Gatekeepers, Vandread and Hellsing licensed so hopefully the trend continues and VSS and FMP is licnesed by Pioneer

Yeah it would be a title that would be a big seller in the west.

But for me it's too early to be licensed and gonzo and pioneer have a good relationship it seems and from what I heard adv haven't endeared themselves with some jap companies (go mediablasters get noir!!). Pioneer also kill adv on the technixal sie of thr dvds and if they use the right dub studio the dub should be more than adequete. Though it would come out on 8 dvds the same thing would happen if adv released it and pioneer do box sets :)

I also think that it was a stupid rumor started by someone, I mean what company don't anime fans want to license anime. One that licenses everything under the sun, and then not release them until hell freezes over!!

Anyways back onto the anime side of fmp

Ep 03 has been released (by hqa and ai) so hopefully you guys can get ahold of it, i'm going to wait for afs release since i'm kinda loyal to that channel and by getting the af 03 i know it will fit on the same cd as the rest.

Just saw episode three. Another fine episode :D I laughed when I saw Kurz cover Sagara with a sniper rifle about 5 minutes after he stumbles in the apartment drunk as a skunk. A true mark of an elite soldier :lol: Anyways, Sagara is so clueless in normal life. It makes me think that he's been trained as a soldier since his childhood a la Heero Yuy. They both definitely have a similar look. Cross Heero and Kenshin and you get Sagara Sano..I mean Sousuke.

damn af they release ep 3 and because two frames had ------ up colors they are going to redo it and try to get around the problem which is in the actual raw! The price of being loyal sigh

Second it's good to see i'm not the only person to see the resemblence between sagara and heero. He's nowhere near as dull and robotic as heero yui is and as you said could be crossed with himura himself.

Madman (an australian anime licenser)had on their website on the 5th of Feb a whole new bunch of titles they have licensed and should be coming out in Australia this year.

One of them strangely was

Full Metal Panic

So expect either Pioneer or ADV to announce they have licenesd it sooner rather than later.

Well according to some ppl in the know it seems adv have grabbed Full metal Panic (boo hiss) all I can say is they better not have spike spencer (shinji, akito) do sagaras voice!!!! and also tiffany grant (askua) do kanames voice.

Hopefully this information is wrong and pioneer managed to get it but I heard the bidding war for this got pretty high. If adv did bag Full Metal Panic expect them to announce it at a con on the 15th of Feb

I also prefer the translation done by a-f&af over hqa&ai. It's just the a-f&af are slower to release the eps.

Yay, episode 5 is out! Sagara gets to kick a little more butt in this one. The only thing I had a gripe with was Gaul's AS. Why the hell does it have a plume on it?! Unless it has some secret function, it's looks pretty useless to me.

I'm floored at how much fan service was in ep6.Ep6 was somewhat depressing,yet they kept going after 'fan shots' and tried adding humor. The episode had a dark undertone and the humor didn't fit. Another thing is I hate the stupid plume on Gal's mecha...looks so stupid and there is no purpose to it....

The quality of haiyaku's 7 isn't bad, didn't see their 6 since ai/hqa released theirs. There's a couple bad frames in ep 7, looks like its due to the "anti-----" setting in nandub. Other than that its perfectally fine. I have to say very interesting comments during the opening of haiyaku's release :)

I've heard a lot about the crapiness of the haiyaku sub of ep 7,so I'm downloading it and the anime-keep version. The fanservice wasn't really that bothersome for me. You don't really even notice after awhile. If it does bother you, just watch Agent Aika or Najica Blitz Tactics beforehand so you'll get used to it easier. :lol:

Anyways, just saw ep7 subbed by animekeep. Very nice. The Kaname-Sagara relationship becomes more overt in this ep. Plus, there's some more nice mech-kickin action. Does anyone think Gaul is really dead? One would think so from the size of the explosion, but he escaped a shot to the head before. Plus, it's hard for me to imagine a main antagonist going down so easily, unless there's a bigger fish lurking out there. Anyways, I still hate that plume on Gaul's mech. It looks so fruity...

Yes I beleive Gaul is really dead. I never really expected him to be a main character in the first place, he always seemed to be an underling. And his plum on his mecha so looks like the living mecha in gasaraki.

On the Gaul issue, if he survives i beleive hes going to somehow go through some metamorphesis. Like maybe somehow he gets halfblow up, becomes part robot and like they put the lambis drive in him or something so he kinda changes. *shrug*

Episode 9 look like having the love triangle finally going with Theresa the captain of the submarine. Thought they would have brought this in earlier.

Episode 7 haiyuka opening subbing was funny

FMP 9 was great. Of course, since I'm becoming a die-hard FMP fan now, that statement would go for any episode, so it's probably not worth all that much. :lol:

That opening subbing was hilarious on ep. 7. I don't know why, but my roommate and I were busting a gut laughing at that. Probably because it's not something you'll normally find, but hilarious nonetheless.

Just saw episode 9. Great ep, except I noticed a little error. When Sagara is giving the earrings to Chidori, he has his jacket off. Then it cuts back to him wearing the jacket. Finally it cuts back to him again, without the jacket. All in a span of less than a minute. Sloppy, Gonzo, sloppy...

Who else here finds the facial expressions made by Chidori Kaname just hilarious? I mean, the contortions on her face are not normally ones you'd see on a female character.... it's almost like the thing a GUY would do, yet she does it.

EVERYTIME she goes into her wierd smiles or smirks or appalled expressions, my roommate and I just bust up. There have been so many instances where I'd have to back the episode up because we missed stuff by laughing too much.

I just love it! :D

...and her mock laugh is quite hilarious as well. :lol:

Ive watched episode 11, as i hypothisized Gaul is but a fading memory and now the real trouble has become known. I was disappointed in episode 10 being that in my eyes got pretty boring during it, however, 11 has made up for that. Full of suspense the episode finally reaches one of the series' climaxes and the Bohemeth (sp?) has been unleashed. For all you FMP fans who have watched this episode what are you thoughts on what is going to happen with the bohemeth? Do you have any idea of the special powers, or why it is crazy to unleash something of this magnitude? (maybe something to do with just the potential of massive destruction) any bets on the outcome? :)

I look forward to reading some of your comments.

Well, having seen all released eps of FMP so far, I think that the series is headed downhill rather rapidly :( I know it is the latest darling of anime fans nation wide, but I am entitled to my opinion (as is everyone else, of course). The last interesting ep was the one that ended the entire airplane hijaking drama. Episodes since have had a few moments where the potential of the series broke the surface, but I am not really expecting much any more. I'll just keep watching hoping that it gets better. 24 eps, lets see how it holds up. Something tells me it wont.

I think its going to do okay, episode 10 really depressed me, it was one of the first episodes I really didnt like, episode 11 was better, but still not as good as episode 8 & 9. They are starting to catch your attention with just cliffhangers, and they are definatly keeping you in the dark about the entire situation, noone knows why mithril was created, what other black technology is out there, and who is behind this 'evil group'. Its obvious that Gaul was just a pawn, just like i beleive this kid is who is piloting the Behemoth (yes ive correct my spelling) is also. What is giving FMP its ultimate shine is the way they did it, they threw in a little comedy, well defined characters that clash with each other, mecha, little fanservice, and polished it off with scenes and situations that were drastic and wellknown. I can definitely see why some people like FMP. Initially, I was a big "fan" of it as well. The reasons that you gave for why it is good, it having a little bit of everything, may kind of be its weakness in my opinion. Sure, FMP does a lot of things, but I do not think it does any of them well enough to justify spreading itself out like that. Or maybe because it does not do any thing/s well, they decided to do a few things marginally decent.

As for the cliffhangers, I think they are a double edged sword. Yes, they can make people watch again, which is the aim of having a cliffhanger, but after a while it gets rather old. I think that any show which has to resort to a cliffhanger every week, like FMP, is only doing itself, and its fans, a huge disservice. My thoughts of FMP so far are not those of an interesting cast of characters who I want to see more of, they are more like "which lame stunt will they try and pull of next week?," "Is he still alive behind the park bench?," or "What will he do next?"

After 11 episodes, I do not feel I have gotten to know any character of FMP well enough to remotely care what happens to him or her. After 11 eps of a 24 ep series, I'd think that the character development should be far beyond what it is now (at least for one character, hopefully two).

In my opinion, FMP is the anime equivalent of CBS' "Survivor." I'll state again tho, FMP DOES have the potential to be really good again.

Let me be clear, this is not an attack on FMP fans or the groups who sub the anime. Groups give the people what they want, and the people want FMP.

The black technology that is installed into the behemoth, Lambda Driver, is draining the thought of the user and turns it into a psy amp weapon, either for shielding or offensive. There is also a side effect to this lambda driver as stated by capt Tessarosta, it will posses you, as in take control of the mind. If the kids goes berserk than he won't stop killing untill the thing shutsdown, either by powerdrain or by force.

Why the hell would they have a equally big mecha themselves, when they were screaming about how something that big should have never have been built? Second, Sousuke just piloted Mithril's prototype mecha and it was smaller, if that was the prototype when did they get time to build a huge monster like the Behemoth?

Also they must have changed the airtimes, because on the show earlier in the series they said to stay in tune next thursday at 4:30pm, so.... i dunno where your getting your information.

I have an anime keep version, which they also subbed the preview and there was specificly "a rampaging behemoth and a opposing Avarest" in there. As for proof take a look at the attachement. How would you know that they didn't already build it before the smaller prototype? How would they know its problem if they had never tried it out? The answer should be, they already got one. How about the prototype is too refine the Lambda drive, too actually get it to be usefull.

I must appologise for giving the wrong info. hello all, im planning to watch Full Metal Panic, although i really dont know anything about it (too tired to go through all the thread). what is it like and can anyone give a summary like something you'd read in the back of a dvd case? and if possible, name any anime thats kinda like it. i like gonzo animes like gatekeepers and vandread so will i like this one?

note: i was supposed to watch rahxephon, but after going all that eva clone etc etc in the rahxephon thread, it shunned me off.

FMP is currently only out fansubbed, and we all know you have problems reading english, specially when its right infront of you. Maybe you should wait till it comes out dubbed? :)

hmm its like of course u can see its mecha related which makes it already cool. there are ppl called whispers with knowledege of black technology. kanami an ordinary girl is one of the whispered and sagara one of the main characters is made to protect her and is made as a high school student. there the fun begins :D i think that did it.

Anyway Fatal Outlaw ignore him/her get Full Metal Panic it really rocks and I say it's up their with Hellsing as Gonzo's best anime so far. Also check out RahXephon its no way an eva clone and i like it much much better and its by ex sunrise people who did Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and various gundam series.
