I watched the first DVD of El Hazard: The Alternative World and I'm just a tad confused. Can someone answer these questions or direct me to a site that does?
-What's the background story?
-What's the story behind Nanami and Makoto? How did they end up in El Hazard in the first place?
-What are the Bugrons(sp?) ??
-Is there a series before this?
I'd appreciate answers so very much. :D

The Alternative world series is the latest release in the OAV plot line. So it goes:
OAV 1 => OAV 2 => Alternative World
**Note the Wanderers series is a separate plot line**
Incidentally, the DVD box set of the OAV's (called Magnificent World) is excellent.
The basic background is that Makoto gets his friends (and enemy Jinnai) transported to the Kingdom of El Hazard. There they have all these cool adventures aimed at him getting home and trying to find that girl with the white hair that you see in the opening theme song sequence (her name is Ifurita). There this little love octagon erupts where Shayla sort of falls for Makoto, but never can tell him and then Nanami begins to start thinking about him in that way as well. All of this ends with Fujisawa marrying Miz and hence the beginning of the Alternative World where Miz is being replaced by Qawoor Towels.
Nanami and Makoto are school mates at their high school. And Nanami is Jinnai's younger sister. And their transportation to El Hazard is basically an accident.
The bugrom are basically the bad guys of El Hazard that Jinnai ends up shacking up with because each earthling that comes to El Hazard gets a magical power. Jinnai can talk to them, Makoto is able to talk to machines, Fujisawa gets really powerful (when not drunk) and Nanami can see the Shadow people.
In any case, I highly recommend seeing the Magnificent World series as I consider it to be one of my favorites. Sort of goes up there with the Tenchi DVD box and the Ranma OAVs.
Hope that helps.

Ah! It makes sense now. I'll be sure to look in the first 2 series before watching more of the Alternative World. Thanks! :)

Yeah. The first OVA is the best, just like what happened in the Tenchi spin-offs.
And to make things more confusing, I believe Alternative World was released as a TV series, even though it "feels" more like an OVA:D
