There are so many Macross series, I was just wondering, what's the order you're supposed to watch them in or does it matter? Are there "alternate universe" series' like with Gundam, or does it all pretty much follow along the same universe?

You should watch them in this order:

Macross, the original series or if you can't get that, then Robotech: The Macross Saga will do Macross: Do You Remember Love, this movie will make more sense if you've already seen the first series. It tells the same events as the series, but in a different way. Macross: Flashback 2012, this one is only about 30 minutes long and is really a super music video, but it'll make more sense after seeing DYRL. It's also hard to find so don't sweat it if you can't find it Macross Plus, Perhaps the best Macross of them all Macross II: Lovers Again, This is the one that's not in the same timeline as the rest of the Macross stuff, it's ok but not as good as the other ones Macross 7 TV series, 49 episodes that take place after all the previous series and will definately not make alot of sense if you haven't seen Macross and Macross Plus Macross 7: The Galaxy is calling Me, Macross Dynamite 7, Macross 7 Trash: Not to sure on which order these one take place except they are all after the Macross 7 series. The Galaxy is Calling Me is a movie while the rest are OVA's around 4 episodes. I haven't seen these so I don't know too much about them yet.

As long as you see the original Macross series first, which you really need to, the rest can be viewed in a different order, but the way I listed them is the best way.

It would be the OVA. The movie is another take on the events, though I like the way the movie presents the story better.

Isamu has got most of the details right; however, you can skip Macross 2 after seeing the oringinal. Macross 2 is actually an alternate universe and has no relevance to Macross from Studio Nue whatsoever.

My advice is to see the OVA first before the movie. The movie cuts out a lot of scenes like Delta Wars but sums up the story in a nicer package because they cut out less relevant details of each character. The only exception to that is the end where you actually see more.
