Gatts' past

Berserk would have been best seen by having some knowledge about the manga first... I hear that Gatts was raped as a child in the manga. Is this true? that sort of explains the little flashbacks he has as a kid being chased by that guy who's name i can't remember right now but ended up being his guardian.

Is that true?


Well, i plan to buy the manga soon, hopefully there's reliable translations available online. ^^

Is gatt's history it is obvious from the clips that have been shown that gambino has trained gatts after finding him with his parents hanging from trees gutted

Gatts finally became stronger than gambino (think) when gambino looses his mind because rumours have been spread and i think maybe somthing happend with his wife or daughter.

Gambino tries to kill gatts and without trying gatts kills him. This moment was traumatic on gatts and he has struggled to live with it for a while.

There isn't really much you should learn about gatt's history anyhow. Right off they show gatt's future then the rest is his history when you think about it. IE eps 2-25 + (26 which nothing to do with anything) were all about gatt's history and him getting to where he kills the snake thing.....

If you do end up getting the manga, give me the details of where you got it as i would like to buy a copy if i can just pm me...

Well, the anime only says that Gatt's mother died at childbirth. It shows Gambino being a jerk to Gatts, but no sexual violence is ever implied. Gambino just comes across as a bitterly harsh and angry man. I'd like to get ahold of the manga. It seems like a ton of extra info is in it from everything I've heard.

I actually believe that in one of gatt's flashbacks where gambino is telling him about his past, possibly just bofore he kills gambino gambino talks about it and it shows a flashback of the tree, It had a name in the manga but in the anime it just showed it. The sky was red and there were people hanging from it..... Or am i remembering the manga... im not sure anymore

Here is what I know.

The tree mentioned is where Gatts was born. Gatts' mother was one of the bodies hanging on the tree. Gambino and his group came across that tree. They saw the baby and seeing as a child born from a corpse was considered a bad omen they wanted nothing to do with the child. Sis, (I think that was her name) who was Gambino's significant other ( I don't think mercenaries had wives), wanted to raise the child and Gambino reluctently agreed. Later on Sis died from what I think was chicken pox. While a lot of people thought it was Gatts fault since he was bad luck, Gambino continued to raise him.

There was one ugly mercenary (I forget his name, so I will refer to him as the ugly merc) who came into Gatts' tent one night and raped him, he told him that he had paid Gambino to have him for the night. An enraged Gatts tried to confront Gambino the next day but Gambino acted as if nothing had happened, so Gatts assumed that Gambino knew nothing of the incident. During the next battle, while Gambino's mercenaries were fighting, the ugly merc followed one of the troops into the forest, Gatts followed them and shot the ugly merc in the back with a crossbow, killing him as revenge for his actions. After, Gambino became a cripple, he came into Gatts tent drunk one night trying to kill him. Gambino blamed Gatts for the death of Sis and told Gatts that the ugly merc did indeed pay him for that night. Gatts ended up killing Gambino in self defense.

This part of the story was ommited from the anime, maybe because it was far too disturbing, and because it was not an essential part of the Berserk story, at least as far as the anime is concerned. It does shed some light on a few things, like why Gatts did not like to be touched at the start of the story. It also adds an important piece of the puzzle in the development of Gatts character, that the two people who Gatts spent his life trying to impress ended up stabbing him in the back.

I do know of a site that provides decent manga translations, it is pretty legit, you have to purchase the manga and provide proof to the webmaster to gain access to the translations. I think they are up to volume 7 in the translations. They even provide translations of the chapters currently being released in the Young Animal magazine for those lucky enough to be able to get their hands on it. I don't have the address on me now but I will post it once I get off work.
