after months...or years (around 2 to be exact) of resisting fansubs...i finally saw vandread (just 2 out of the 4 episodes of the first dvd). the graphics are stunning, and the sound sounds awesome in digital surround, its been a long time coming and waiting for the *official* dvd is so worth it (it just pains me that theres a 6 week gap between releases).

now, for the impressions part, i only saw the first two episodes and its really awesome, theres already a building plot in episode 1. and im digging the whole men against women thing.

and a question just to get some people to reply to this none sense post ( ) i was watching the dub (primarily becuase david lucas voices the doctor, cant recall his name) while reading the subs, and i noticed in the subs they used Van-types, while in the dub, they used Van-guards, so which one is right? does it matter? i was just curious...

hmm are you talking about how in the japanese version they call it vandread ? ive never seen the dub version so i dont really know. the thing is that i think hibikis mech is called the vanguard, i dunno why. it was a bagnata, till it got that makeover which you saw. the fighters that dita, meia, and jura pilot are called dreads. so when dita and hibiki merge they call it vandread. short for both. but then they call it vandread dita, as you know why it is her dread thats being used. i hope that helps you :D

Tarak and Mejerr have a different dialect. The correct name is Ban-gata or Ban-type or Van type is also accepted. To the women's ears it sounds like Vanguard.

Solid Snake as a Doctor... Yeah, that was really cool.

oh hehe, cuz i was just wondering why the sub and the dub call it different names. so both are acceptable. anyway, im wathing eps. 3-4 in a few minutes, ill post my thoughts later, or probably tomorow morning

just watched ep. 3, it was pretty good, although not as jam-packed as eps. 1 and 2.

another comment that i should add is, the dub is really really great. i saw ep. 1 in japanese with subtitles and 2 and 3 in english (thank you to whoever invented bilingual dvd's), and i have to say, i personally like the dub better than the sub. the dub was done by ZRO LIMIT, aka, the dubbing company that did bebop, FLCL, outlaw star etc. Wendee Lee voices BC and david lucas voices duero among others.(its amazing how those two dub VA's perfectly fit in their roles) so i say you guys give the dub a try

Your ears are untrained young grasshopper. :D

While David Lucas and Wendee Lee are indeed great voice actors you have to keep in mind they are not voicing the main characters

We have some random bloke guy doing Hibiki and some random ditz girl doing Dita. As a result Hibiki sounds like a wuss when he should sound like a brat and Dita is more helium induced than she needs to be.

Meia' VA does a decent job but her Japanese voice actress had a more tonal voice. I hope she can handle Meia's angst-fest and persona shift in the upcomming episodes.

Barnette's VA sounds too nice at this stage.

The impression i've gotten off people i know of irc (discounting the dub haters) is that the dub is not poor, but it's not great it's just average. Though the dub can improve as many do the further you get into the series.

I also wouldn't mind hearing the dub but finding dvd rips of dubs is really rare over the net and when i prefer subs most of the time its not worth it.

Hopefully Vandread comes out in Australia hey DNA master

i dont think hibiki sounds like a wuss, he does in that one scene in ep. 2 (or was it 3?) durung that conversation with BC about how he's scared etc etc, but other than that, he does sound like a brat, like in ep. 4 when he praises himself becuase he beat the enemy by himself.

and i love dita's voice, it sounds kawaii:cool: she's also the VA of Lime in SMJ Again and the girl in the airport episode in gatekeepers.

uh huh :agreed: i love the part where dita goes to hibiki in the end of the episode and says "promise me you'll only combine with me!" , i mean the dub on that one. dita's dub VA just sounds so cute (at least to me, i know some people dont like it)

one question. at the end of ep. 4, right after hibiki combines with meia for the first time and goes back to his quarters, he puts his handcough back on, why is that? arent the males part of the crew at that point? so why did hibiki put the handcuff's back on?

Punishment for insubordination...?

Psychological problems...?

Handcuff fetish...?

yeah in episode 2, i think he demanded to take them off cause he wanted to prove to bc that he wasnt some coward and he couldnt pilot his vanguard so he said to takeem off so he couldshow them that he wasnt some scared lil man :D

yea, that was what im talking about. and then on ep. 4, he was talking to the leader about how she should listen to him becuase he was a crew member. thats why it puzzles me on why he put his handcoughs back on

Hong DVDs are bootlegs, ESPECIALLY when they are sold on e-bay.

Oh, and this topic is a bit risky, you might offend some moderators. I speak from experience. :D

well i think since he helps fight for the women he should have more say, but i think he still has pride of being a man and because of that he doesnt wanna look like hes friends with the females so he shoves the handcuffs back on to show that he isnt friends with them and that he is still a prisoner but wishes for equal say since he pilots his vangurad to protect them and himself plus the other men on board :D

i saw vandread on cable as well but the whole series isn't finished yet so can't judge it as a whole. its a good anime. currently my favorite. the character designs are good. the strange thing is that, there aren't a lot of good images out there on the web. i got a few good scans from magazines some time ago but they got deleted and now i can't find the site where i got them in the first place.

yeah its hard to find images, but you can try anipike.com and maybe you can find results there, if you already know of anipike just ignore this :heh:
