In the first episode when Shinji is waiting for Misato to pick him up, he has a quick vision of Rei on the street. Then it disappears. Was this actually Rei and if it was a vision how did he know what Rei would look like? Is it because she is cloned from his mother? While I'm on the subject, what exactly is Rei?

I don't know what Rei is doing there... but my idea is that she is there to somehow welcome Shinji to Tokio-3... but as she was unconscient for the results of the test with Unit00, then she 'projected' herself there with her powers, without realizing of it... to Shinji welcome Shinji...

Well my theory is one that eps 1-24 are infact happening within 3rd impact. this expalins a few things that might seem out of place.
