That's revealed in episode 24 where they show the core and Ritsuko destroys the "spare Rei's"
It is also shown in ep 19 where EVA UNIT 01 refuses Rei and the dummy plug, most probably because it is the same soul.

I believe that Unit-01 refuses the Dummy Plug because of it's Resident Soul - Yui. The Dummy Plug works in the battle with Bardiel/Unit-03 so why not then? Because Shinji's life was at stake, and so it was an act of protection.

I'm glad you brought that up because I was reading that the dummy plug has to be inserted into the EVA like an entry plug, like in ep 19. So how did they activate it in the Bardiel/Unit 03 episode when UNIT 01 had an entry plug in it and not the dummy plug?

I think they had some kinda device behind Shinji's seat in the entry plug that allowed it to act as both a normal entry plug and dummy plug. Cos, when the dummy plug activated, Shinji turned around, and saw the words 'Dummy plug 01' on something behind his seat.
