Where can I buy the first books in the series? (& others as well)

that depends where you live, im sure there are online places to get it, but personally i just get mine from my local comic store, which happens to be one of the biggest in perth.

You can buy them online from http://www.animenation.com they usually discount their manga and their shipping rates are very reasonble. They also take checks & money orders if you don't have a credit card or don't like using it online. Their service has really improved too, They used to be slow, but now they're great ^_^.
If you don't want to go to the net, you can order them from places like Borders and Barnes & Noble or a local comic book shop or anime related store.

So the first one would be "No Need for Tenchi" ???

That is correct, the first graphic novel is just called No need for Tenchi.
the second is called No need for Tenchi : Sword Play.
