I think Akira is made by someone else(Katsuhiro Otomo). Your right about GitS though. But this movie is one of my favorite movies, but a lot of people don't understand so they say its boring. If you have seen Patlabor and/or GitS, then you know that Mamuro Oshii works are heavy on story and politics, not a lot of people like that.

If you pay attention its really not that confusing... personally I think that Perfect Blue would be alot more confusing to a first time viewer then Jin Roh. I liked this movie which is sorta unusual since i tend to stay away from movies in general. :heh: It is somewhat depressing... but I love the fact that they use the tail of Little Red Riding Hood... its such a good marker for foreshadowing. :D
I'd recommend it. :)
Oh, Jin-Roh was released and I still haven't ordered it!
Jin-Roh is a spectacular movie, a must-see in my opinion. I absolutely loved it. It was a movie that took me by surpsise, because even though I wasn't looking forward to it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you haven't gotten it yet you should stop reading this and get it.

Yer dern tootin' it's good! It is a tradgedy, to be sure. There are little to no comedic elements in the movie, but it is one of the best anime films I have seen in a long while. It makes you think, and to get anything out of the ending you must think about the meanings behind the characters and their actions. If you're looking for giant robots or magical girls, take a hike, because this film has none. And that's a good thing.
My recommendation? Get the special edition on DVD. I can almost guarantee you'll like it. ;)

Well what I want to know if this movie has any action! Like um... blood, guns, explosions, sex, guts, whats in it!? Well, the body count is a bit higher than that in "Ghost in the Shell," another dark themed Oshii-directed film. In other words, people get shot up, oh yessiree they do. Most of the film is a drama, but the action scenes at the beginning and end are things of pure beauty. :D Bodies turn to bloody masses of hole-filled meat when they meet the business end of the Wolf Brigade's machineguns.
The soundtrack is also pretty good. However, I don't think that its inclusion warrants the $50 US price tag. I would have sold it for no more than $40 US, as there simply aren't enough extras on the second disc to make it really excellent. Although you do get a nice selection of goodies, more than typical anime discs give you, it just isn't enough. More production art would have been nice, as, according to the interview with the movie makers on the second disc, there were copious amounts of storyboards, drawn in detail, that went into the making of the film.
The bottom line? Get the special edition if you're an anime fan. If you're simply a movie fan, then go with the regular edition, as you won't find the special edition filled with enough extra features to keep you satisfied for long. But by all means, even if you aren't an anime fan (and that means the above statement applies to almost no one here) get the movie on the bare-bones disc.
It just plain rules!

I had an idea lingering in my head about going to the next con as Jin Roh, but after seeing this, I just had to bow my head in shame, there is no way of beating these people.

Okay I saw it bought it and still don't really like it a whole lot, but I think it's one of those things you have to let sink in and rewatch a few times until you can get everything out of it. A good anime nevertheless.

Wow this thread is old... Anyways, I really enjoyed this anime. To me it was like a mix of NGE, Lain, and Grave of the Fireflies.
How do you get Lain and Eva out of this? The plot was fairly straightfoward; lots of political maneuverings, intricate relationships, and backstabbing, but the plot was totally physical and mundane. Grave of the Firelfies, only in that it is realistic and sad...
I really liked this movie, but I would anyone who wants to watch it: this is NOT an action anime. There is good action, to be sure; but if that's what you watch it for, you will not be satisfied.
