The TV series that was on tape, at least i think that's what it was... all the same, it was GOOD!

I prefered the OAV, but the TV series was A.) longer and B.) more true to the novels

I prefer Chronicles, although I think the ending was a bit lacking in luster and dramatical length.

Indeed, they did actually run out of time. I hear that in the Novels, there are two notable differences in terms of depth and dramatical length. They include the entire ending segment and the part where Spark and his gang are in Valis.

As a sage of Lodoss (heh, my IM Screen Name), I have done much research and found out a lot about the Valis part, but know little of the extra stuff in the novels regarding the ending.

As for the Valis part, I know it went into detail about a standing army of Marmo that was sent from Kanon to attack Valis. They were camped out around the outskirts of Valis and were attacking the capital of Roid constantly, and they even talked about a Dark Elf Leader among them.

Also, the Novels had two additional villains in Marmo. Apparently the Marmo Council, in total (at least at that time after the War of Hereos) was composed of Ashram, Wagnard, the King of the Dark Elves, and the head of the Dark Priests.
