how old is Akira? I've heard it's older than DBZ and Evangelion, but I've heard DBZ is 20 or more years old, so I'm confused. I felt like I was watching a cross of DBZ and NGE which wasn't too good. How many people here have seen Akira and how many liked it? I thought it sucked myself.

Well I respect your opinion on it, but I thought it was a masterpiece, great, smooth animation, lotsa action, twisted gore, stuff like that, I think it's made in 1991, not sure, and DBZ? I think thats 1990?? I have no clue really..

For some reason with Akira 1985 keeps springing into my head although I am very uncertain, 1991 might be right. I have no idea about DBZ because its terrible :P its definitely older than Eva though

well it was pretty boring and annoying. I so bad wanted to kill that power greedy idiot.. was practically screaming to know wtf akira was... I mean, the show holds too much important info back!! and the way the motor bikes moved and stuff was unrealistic too.

I have seen Akira and like it. At the time it was one of the earlier anime I had seen since there wasn't a whole lot to choose from. I forget how many years ago that was, but it was a while ago. I find it hard to compare it to more recent anime, but when taken in its own light I still think its quite good but definately not for everyone.

Akira has been around for a while. The manga was written in 1983 and the film came out in 1988.

akira rocked man!!! i dont know how old it is, but dbz isnt 20 years old... dragon ball started in the 80's dbz early 90's and dbgt ended around 1996ish i think... dont quote me on those though... but akira was great!!!! i like the fast paced motorcyclye stuff =)

Akira was a good movie and it was made in 1988. I think that it tried to tell you too much at once. But the animation and action was really good!

Sorry to be dredging up an Old thread from the past, but I finally saw Akira today (My friends Sci-Fi class had a screening of it and she invited me), and I'm curious what interpretations people have of the ending....Does Tetsuro achieve "pure energy?" And does the Grand majority of Neo-Tokyo die in Tetsuro's umm, well whatever he did?

Finally, does anyone else think that one of the pale midgets in the wheelchair looked like Louie Anderson??? And what was up with that girl Kowri, was she crushed by the giant flesh-Tetsuro monster?

Akira is the best anime movie IMHO. It got many of my friends(and also me^^) hooked to anime.

Actually, Tetsuo was absorbed by Akira who was summoned back to life by the three childs. Go there where i pretty much explained the end imho. http://animeboards.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4751

Theres a DVD due out real soon now (theres no date that I know of it keeps being put back) The only really old Anime series that I can think of is the original Gundam, it was a 1979 job. Of course Lupin is older...

hey pengi, I find it difficult to understand how you can like something like Neon Genesis, and not be able to appreciate something like Akira??? there are so many parallels in retrospect - Akira (THE akira) seems a lot like the EoE Rei/Lilith, and Tetsuo a bit like Shinji, holding all that power and using it just for the purpose of making himself feel better,
both endings signal a kind of death/rebirth of mankind,

SBS is re-screening "Akira" at 10pm on Saturday the 25th of November.

This is immediately following the first half of "Goku" - with the second half to be screened later (presumably the week after, but I couldn't be bothered to check).

Well, i was also with some friends when i first watched it, and we all loved it^^. And i don't like DBZ either, but tha doesn't make me hate Akira.

David: Absolute Unix/Linux buff. This guy reads manuals on programming, and also has the skill to create his own cables and computer interfaces out of junk. He is a Wiz, knows it all, shows little interest in most of the 'normal' facets of life. However he still fits in due to his recent liking towards decent computer games..

daniel: well we've all read my bitch posts about this guy. he watches anime, but isn't a big buff. he is only really interested in his counter strike, quake 3 and overclocking his computer. also has a large porn collection. Him and I often don't agree on anything anymore,and if I like it he doesn't.

now then. we had 1 hour before we had to be back at school, and we'd just done a long walk to get to my house. I put Akira on. Now then I was mostly thinking abuot school,. getting the guys drinks, that sorta thing. they were mostly talking about geek stuff, and watching the show. basically they bitched about the physics involved and I agreed of course. so basically, we weren't really in the mood for a deep thougtful anime, and if it aint a rocket jump that does a head shot, I don't think the guys got excited. their lack of enthuasasm wouldn't exactly put me in the mood for it either.

so like i said, this saturday I'll watch it again and re-evaluate it ok?

well I know that one of them liked Evangelion from volumes 1-12...however he didn't get all deep or life changed from it, and putting volume 13 on puts him to sleep or makes him restless. I guess it's cos he has A.D.D


David, um, NO. if it isn't on a computer, he wont see it, prolly wont like it. He always ICQs me telling me how good certain movies are, thing is he wont see them until he has them on DivX ;-) (on his computer in other words)

it's really slack. but I am gonna make new friends anyways, people who I wont be fighting with..cos I am only going to keep becoming more and more whatever the sort of person I am becoming, and if they can't hack who I am right now, there's no way they'll handle who I am in 6 months.

let's face it, I'd rather watch anime than porn, and rather draw and get a good nights sleep, than go to a LAN party, go 40 hours sleepless, drink lots of caffeine and sugar, and get home feeling like ----.

plus I like AB and they think it sucks.
