Baaaahhh :) Depends really, Sometimes I'll actually know what they're saying, sometimes not.. I memorize a lot of japanese words so sometimes I'll know, but in other cases if I don't, then I hope to have the lyrics for the song somewhere or another ^^; The more I know, the better!!! ^.^

I WISH! I don't speak japanese...yet.
I don't always understand the lyrics, but I usually learn them anyway, and I ususally try to find translations on the net to at least have some idea of what the heck I'm listening to.

Heh..hate to break an...err, trend, but I speak Japanese fluently, no da...
(Self-taught!! Yay!! ..^^; )
..I also speak Cantonese, Chinese dialects, German, an' some others..of course English, no da..

But Even before I spoke the language flently (ie: before 4th grade..) having the songs, true lyrics, and translations really can help you to learn the language..^^

It's words, to a catchy tune, that you memorise...learning a language with music *is* possible, no da!! ^_^

I like listening to the catchy tunes. I don't speak Japanese, but some songs are so simple that it easy to sing along to (opening theme to Totoro anyone?!). Also, I find it's better not to know what the some songs are about, as once they are translated or transformed into english, the songs tend to suck. I mean, can you imagine what "Zettai Unmai Mokushiroku" (aka The Absolute Destiny Apocalyse in english) from Utena would sound like in english!? Arrgh, it doesn't bear thinking about..,

this has nothin 2 do wit the topic, but i just like 2 say that this thread wuz dead 4 2 months~!!

it's nice that somebody brought it back up again :) new members can talk about it without making a new thread, i just thought of something, whenever somebody new reply to a dead thread, somebody yell THIS THREAD IS ALREADY DEAD and when somebody new started a new thread, others say THIS THREAD HAS BEEN DONE ALREADY so what are u suppose they to do, i don't think there is anything wrong with reviving a USEFUL dead thread, i may be wrong, but that's just what i think

Yumiko

ah cool. who revived this thread??

newhoo, some japanese songs, you cant really understand what they are singing, even if you are fluent. just like some english songs, you cant understand wat they are singing until u listen really hard. so having lyrics help either way.

and when you dont understand the meanings of the idioms of the song, that is my problem. so i hafta ask ppl wat they mean.

hiyoku?? i would really like to know how u learned to speak japanese on your own?? i'm 1/2 japanese, and even with japanese classes i have things i dont understand becuz i'm not immersed in the language to use it as frequently. isnt it hard to learn on your own??

Second Paragraph, first line. You brag about speaking so many languages and you're the greatest but your grammar. Spoke instead of speak? *ROFLMAO* Sorry to dis you but I thought that was freakin hilarious! Oh my goddess!!! I couldn't breathe after laughing so hard! No attitude added or anything Hiyoku. It probably was a typo. It was just hilarious.

i dont understand the japanese thongs, but i really like a lot of them, cause they are just great! sometimes the voice isnt so important. the song gives you just a good view how it could be.

I can sing mast of my fave J-pop and anime songs in Japanese. It's easier to sing it than speak it sometimes. Unfortunately, I have no idea what most of the words translate too! :heh:
I've been studying a little Japanese on my own from the interenet, dictionaries, and some of those "how to" books, and I plan on taking classes over the summer.

Call me weird please, but I prefer to listen to songs without knowing what they mean. It kinda brings the music into foreground.

I have a lot of anime songs in Japanese and like many people here, even though I have no idea what I'm really saying, I memorize the words because I just like the song.

is kareoke fun because whenever we have it at school people really get into it? But I can't see myself ever going in front of people to sing with my bright red face!

if you're not shy, karaoke is really fun. its just a place to hang out with friends, sing, and eat.

I'm currently learning japanese, but it's a little hard... My maternal language is french, and I've learned english by listening tv and songs... so I try to do the same thing with jap! I sing the jap songs like i was with english ones, I don't always say the good things, but anyway... I search for the lyrics, and it helps me a lot...

For the comprehension, I listen to animé episodes, and so far I know about 50 words... but only simple words... anyway, i'm trying hard, and someday, i'll be as good in jap than in english!
