Is there a difference between the two? Does the movie have scenes cut out? Which would be better?

There is a diffence between the two, but the same general story. The movie has new scenes like Isamu and Lucy's date on the dock scene and a new Sharon Apple song. The events take place in a different order and is given a more dramatic presentation. The ending of the movie is also better. There are also parts of the OVA that aren't in the movie, such as Isamu and Gulds battle on the practice range at the end of the 2nd OVA ep. Overall, I prefer the movie version better.
I thought that the OVAs were much more satisfying. I thought the movie would have more extra footage then it did; the only good added sequence was the final fight between guld and the ghost (which was fairly incredible and makes the movie worth watching if only for this one scene). I really didn't care for the added sharon footage and the 'rushed' feel.
But it's really up to your taste, you can't really make a hard case as to which is 'better' than the other, so I guess you just have to watch both :D

Do you mean the one song she sang while the Macross was moving? That one chilled my blood! It just wouldn't be right without it.

I prefer the movie version to the OAV version, as I feel the movie focuses more on the relationship between the Isamu, Myung, & Guld...., whereas the OAV deals more on the rivalry between Isamu & Guld..., the movie has more of a 'romantic' element to it...,

Are you talking about INfo high or the one before it?
information high and a sai en (the weird chanting one that plays when the macross moves) are in both if I can remember. What I didn't care for was the extra sharon CG. They should have put some better transitions in instead.
