What was your take on the film? Personally, I thought it was a fantastic film. The animation was terrific, the Wolf Squad's protective gear looked awesome and kicked some serious butt. The storyline was very good. The music was absolutely sensational.

Did you like the film? Did you not? If not, what did you feel it was lacking?

one of my fav. animes ever! the story (although a little bit complicated) is very intelligent and the character designs are awsome too! (see my avatar)

the only minor flaw of the movie is that it gets a little bit boring in the middle, but the shocking ending makes it an absolute classic!

Yeah, I've seen you around the forums... Love you avatar ;) And I figured you liked the show just by looking at your avatar :p

I must concur, it was a tad boring toward the middle, but it immediately picked back up and was a shock at the end. It was really a great movie ^_^

I'd never been a big fan of Little Red Riding hood, but I must admit, that was ingenius to put such references in there to the story... it really added to the story :)

Still the ending was probably the kind of ending I've been looking for, when love doesn't prevail, a not-so-happy end. If a few more animes, mangas, etc. had it like that... Still Intellegence to Counter Intellegent, heh.

I liked it, but as stated it was a touch long and drawn out. Fantastic animation, though.

I think my brother put it best when he said it was an awful long way to go to say what they were trying to say. If they had strategically shaved off about 20 minutes of the more boring bits, I think it would have absolutely ruled. As it is, I can only give it B+ :P

Oh, and one other quote from my brother (yeah, he's a card):

"What was the main character's purpose again? Stand there and look stoic? I think he had, like, 2 lines..."

yeah, it did get a little bit boring in the middle part of the film. but because the animation is of such a great quality (the characters look just like real Asian people, not the usual big-eyed anime chara's. allso their facial expresions are so life like!) and the ending is great, i deffinetly give it a A+!

Jin-Roh did get a bit too metaphoric at times, but overall, this movie was well written and well directed.

It is definitely worth watching. Plus, the action scenes sound awesome wiht Dolby Digital DTS. :D

I loved it! :D

Like a few others mentioned, the sound and animation is just pure greatness; and I don't think the story could have been much better (...well, yeah... the middle....).

I do think a person has to have a pretty open mind to really get all it has to offer though; if you actually sit and think about it, there wasn't much at all in it that was just nothing but filler - everything had some kind of purpose (I like Anime like that) ;)

Anyway, it ruled.

i would also agree, the middle was a bit on the boring side but the ending was very good.

It's supposed to be a classic. I really need to get to watch this one.

It's the best anime I've EVER seen. It tops my favourite right now. Note that it's not for the easy-going type, as it is a tragedy, but all the best stuff are tragedies.

That really is a valid point. The most emotional and generally heart-wrenching movies are the best because Humans are such emotional beings, it just feels into our feelings and thoughts. Then we enjoy it even more ^_^ The tragic movies are one of the most engrossing types of films...

Jin Roh is all cel animation, which makes it that much more impressive. It is a magnificent movie, and is easily in my top 20 of favortie anime.

I bought Jin Roh a few weeks ago, but just got around to watching it a few hours ago for some odd reason. Anyway, that's why I'm bringing this thread up, better than starting a new one, right? There have already been quite a few. :p

I thought the movie was amazing...the animation was amazing, and I just loved the really dark setting throughout most of the movie. As a lot of people said, it did have that boring part towards the middle, but after that, things really picked up, and I really really enjoyed it. The ending was great, though there were a few parts that sorta threw me off, probably because I kept getting up and having to do something in the middle of it. >_> Anyway, an amazing movie, and while I haven't seen a whole lot of anime movies, I definitely have to say it's the best I've ever seen...yep, even better than Grave of the Fireflies IMO. =P

Another one, albeit short (http://www.serc.rmit.edu.au/~ashelton/anime/html/grave_of_the_fireflies.html)

Some user reviews (http://www.animetempy.com/reviews/DEFG/grave_of_the_fireflies.htm)

A tragic movie, but one of the best out there. It can get you very emotional though.

edit: Oh, to keep in on topic.

Anyone else feel the metaphor of the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale, although good, was a bit prolonged?

Oh, and I loved the line in the end, along with the other line from somewhere near the end:

I might be mangling the quote up a little, since it's off of memory and my memory sucks.
Something about "The wolf gets killed only in the fairy tales...." that coupled with "...and then, the wolf eats up Little Red Riding Hood."

Man, I hate ruining quotes, but I forget them right now and am too lazy to double check. Ah well...

I guess I'm going against the tide here but I thought the movie was a big let down...

Here I was expecting an anime classic, and instead I got something that was actually quite average IMO. The screenwriter (Mamoru Oshii) used the same exact style and presentation in Jin Roh as he did in Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor. While I like it...I would have liked to see something new because in this story it doesn't work as well as it did in those. Again he focuses too much on the social / economic garbage (the boring stuff in the middle) and not enough on the characters.

*Spoilers below*

And there lies why I don't like this movie more. I never once began to feel any compassion for Fuse or the girl. I never found out enough about them to really care what happened to either of them. We got nothing about the girl other then a real quick brush over of her past. Sure, they were both pawns in a bigger plan, but so what? They never seemed human to me. Fuse never talked and when he did he had nothing really to say. And the girl...why did she become a terrorist? Was her family wronged? Why did she agree to help the police? Give me something!
And their relationship? Come on...when she said she wanted to die with him I actually backed the DVD up to see if I blacked out or something because I sure missed their deep love develop for one another. Nope, sure enough all I saw was a couple of walks together and light moments...hardly a 'death do us part' relationship.

I'm sorry but to me I never once connected with either of the lead characters nor their supposed deep love affair. Perhaps if Oshii spent more time dealing with people rather then governments this would have been better. But to be honest, at the end I could have cared less if Fuse killed the girl and then killed himself. I got more emotion out of Gai's death in Nadesico then I got out of this.

To be fair the movie did have some really great moments. I liked the whole idea of a Special Police Force and I loved the armored suits they wore. And the plot was deep, as is usual with Oshii, and the overlay of 'Red Riding Hood' was a nice touch.

But all in all I would only give this a B-. The plot, visuals, and music were great...the characters just never made me care.

Personally, I don't think it's anything special. I only watched the dub though, and that makes it hard to evaluate it. So I really want to see the subbed version, cuz while I was watching the dub, I thought something was missing. The story seemed too simple, which really bugged me while I was watching it. Sigh!! Oh well, guess watching the sub is the only cure.

To those who saw both the sub and dub, which did you like better? Any drastic differences between them?

Ryoma pretty much summed up everything I was going to say, but I'll add this: one thing the movie never addressed is how the Jin-Roh faction came to exist. It would be one thing if they simply represented the 'Kerberos' unit of the Capitol Police. That would be all the motive we need; they would simply be acting to preserve their status as the elite; to retain power for the sake of power. It's an old, old motivation and one well-suited to the style of the movie. Yet, this is not the case. We are told that Jin-Roh is a conspiratorial organization within the 'Kerberos' unit itself; an elite within the elite that existed before this latest threat to their existence. So why? People don't form secret societies for the fun of it. The movie needed an explanation and it never gave one. What I find so irksome about the characters is that the animators were more than capable of showing inner conflict (watch Fuse's face at the end) but they chose to withold it until it was impossible to give a damn. You know, I did actually like the movie but that's only because of my unique preferences. Political maneuvering turns me on.

For my short opinion, click here... (http://animeboards.com/t38668/s.html )

I thought it was really good... It doesn't pass up my favorite anime movie/manga (Which is Akira... But, that's not counting all the series I like more than Akira... Just the movies and mangas).

I thought the movie was quite good .The animation
was great, the character desgins were very cool,
and the storyline was very well written. I also believed
the ending to be quite surprising.
I think i will agree with your brother tho Random, Fuse
was a little too flat and monotone for his own good.

Just finished Jin-Roh... Great flick. And in my opinioon, viz did a great job on the dubbing, lots of va's from the old ocean group, one of my fave's. It does get a bit slow in the middle, but the riot scene's in the begining were amazing, also the end was great. A wolf by any other name eh?:smokin:
