I've never seen such a cheap ending in the manga.Especially the way the series was build up,you'd think Yusuke would have surpassed at least one of the 3 great demon lords, but no,he gets his butt kicked by Yomi and we don't even see the finals. And then it ends with a hostage rescue mission? If it wasn't for the cover I would've thought it was the wrong manga!
And Genkai was given a cheap death too, wich is a shame since she was the character who most often helped Yusuke when in trouble, and there she just dies like that. It's like Togashi was in a rush to finish the series for his editor.

Mmhm...I can sort of agree with that. I haven't read the second to last book, so I can't say much on how the whole tournament went, but I really did get the feeling sensei was rushing or just got bored with all the lines and actions and drawing all the details in. I heard he was having some problems in his life at the time. (Probably with his then-girlfriend, now-wife Naoko Takeuchi)
And after the tournament, everything just sort of mellowed out, y'know? Mukuro's birthday episode (I LOVE THAT ONE!!!) and the little ghost-prank incident, then everything was oh-so-peaceful and people were shown putting their lives together and going on with their daily things. It was nothing spectacular, but u could get the feeling that there won't be any deadly youkai fights for these guys for a long time.
But the hostages-in-Reikai-must-save-the-world episode did seem to be pretty rushed, like it was some spin-off that wasn't really important or sensei was REALLY REALLY desparate to get YYH over and done with.
But no, I have to say the very last story almost brought a tear to my eye, sort of like why I cried at the end of EVA, just coz it was such a happy ending but not really an ending...bah, there goes my sentimentality again. :p

My friend cornered what's wrong with the ending. It's a romantic comedy manga ending. In another manga it would have worked, but Yuyu Hakusho is an action manga with tiny bits of humour and romance.
Lol,and yes,Hiei has a mind to make good present. If only I could ask Kurama to give me one of those plants to use on my boss
To remake the ending(it's a habit of mine) Here's what I would suggest.
We see the beach scene before the final fights, where the gang encourages Yusuke. Then as the finals go on,Mukuro beats Yomi and then goes against Yusuke.after a long and tough battle it's at a stalemate, but then Yusuke whispers to Mukuro he doesn't want the reward anyway so he loses on purpose.

you've got the admit that the ending was very unpredictable. All this time you're rooting for Yuusuke and then on the last minute, he ACTUALLY loses. Where else would you have seen an action/comedy/romance anime where the HERO ALWAYS wins and then looses at a really big tournament?
Well, I'm basing these off the animated series since I haven't gotten the chance to buy the whole manga series (even if i do have that option. mahahahahah... but i will very soon... rubs hands together.) It's actually a nice touch to have some 'random guy' win the tournament instead of the hero we've been following all this time. It makes it feel all the more close to home. At the time, YYH was compared and rivaled only by DBZ, now, i suppose this was his way of turning away from that. See, Yuusuke IS NOT Goku and goku always has that way of getting beat up and always winning... but not Yuusuke. He's not such an ordinary kid but he gets his ass kicked and HE DOES get his ass kicked.
Watching YYH for me is childhood nostalgia and to be able to see the ending, FINALLY, was such a relief and both a closure. Everyone just moved on... ^_^
I've always wondered if they would work on anymore of YYH but the next I've heard after Togashi worked on YYH was that he worked on Hunter X Hunter which is pokemon in comparison... sigh* well, I've seen a few of it and it and well, i like it but not as much as YYh.
btw, did anyone else know that YYH was originally meant to be some sort of Hentai manga? yeah, that's true... the original characters weren't even close to our 4 protagonists. Sometimes I wonder how he might have pulled that off.
