Although I really do not feel i've seen the "meat" of the series (first 9 episodes down) yet...and spoilers are not really major, I will give a warning that SPOILERS from the first episode are present in this review :D But i'll try to keep the major ones out.
First of all, i'm new to the Inu-Yasha world...I just got in the First series Imports, and I poped in the first disk last night. I just could not stop watching. (darn laundry still needs folded.)
From the very beginning you are swept into the world of Inuyasha. You witness the past, and Inuyasha's type of character. You are quickly introduced to the main plot of the story, the Shikon no Tama (Jewel of the Four Souls). This is a glass stone of sorts, that give great power when consumed. Or course our little friend Inu is after it. He has the Jewel but is stoped by Kikyou, I would go into more here, but I feel this is a major part of the story. Inuyasha is then pined and sealed to a tree by Kikyou's magic arrow. The Jewel is then burned and done away with...and thats when we come back to present day and the series begins.
I want to talk about all the stuff i've seen, but i'll keep that to other threads, hehe.
At first I almost had no interest in this anime. I knew it was from the creator of Ranma 1/2, Takahashi Rumiko...and honestly, i've never been a big Ranma fan. However, this year at ACEN (anime con at Chicago) I seen that alot of dealers were carying Inuyasha plushies and assorted items, and also a few were cosplaying it. I very much thought it was simply a romance/fantasy with abunch of side characters for minor battle scenes. Although part of Inu-Yasha is the relation between Inuyasha and the main character Kagome...you quickly come to see thats its NOT a lovey dovey romance tale
If I were to compare Inu-Yasha with other anime i've seen, I would say a cross between Vampire Princess Miyu (VERY similar in many slight ways) Princess Mononoke, and yes Ranma or course. It has the perfect mix from all those. Fantasy, action, character interaction, and that slight touch of comedy...which at times is corney, but always fits the characters quite well.
I'm wondering though...where are all the characters? In episode 8 and 9, you are finaly introduced to some secondary characters. Episode 5-7 I believe, you learn about Inuyasha's past, and his brother. This is also when he recieves his famed sword, forgot name :heh
Its really dissapointing that at least the first series has not come to the states yet...I mean this was originaly aired 2 Years ago, and the first two series have been available to purchase in Japan for quite sometime.
So far, I would say that the Yura of Hair (?) is my favorite episode, and damn near one of the best villians i've seen in awhile. It was great how the hair was animated and the sounds that went along made me cringe when someone got cut. The Frog Lord episode was abit on the corney side, however it was nice to see Nabusomething (please spare the newbie), every anime needs his type.
Inuyasha, is a bad arse let me tell ya...I think, he may become one of my favorite "Kickarse" characters, up there with Spike Spiegel (CB), Major Motoko Kusanagi (GitS), and Kibagami Jubei (Ninja Scroll).
I'd even pit IY up against that pansy Rurouni Kenshin :D
