I don't know how you feel, but for me EVA is the Opera Prima of the Anime. But, I can't explain why.
* What has EVA that other Animes don't have?
And another question, which scene/part/aspect of the series hooked you to the series?
I've got to admit, that the scene that got me into EVA with the attention it deserves was when Shinji falls over a naked Rei. It sounds loser, I know, but that's how it is. I still remember that day, the first thing that came through my head during that scene was "If that happened to me I could die happily" (think that EVA was the first anime I watched with attention and not just for letting time go by as with others before). Not just because of falling over a naked girl, but all that scene, and what comes next, had this attractive taste.

Hehe....i started with manga...it was the scene where Shinji and Asuka learned that they will have to live together...OR the one when Asuka met Shinji, Toji and Kensuke at the game center in front of a UFO-catcher...

Two episodes of reused scenes for an ending
It's characters are "normal." They have flaws and amotions just like us and we see them often during the series. They aren't super special or anything, just human.
The part that got me was the first episode and it was the first anime to get me really into the genre. I remember seeing Sachiel walking around and being attacked and I just knew this was gonna be good.

That's about it right there. The characters in EVA are some of the more realistic anime characters out there.

I was sucked in right from the start. The scene in the first episode were Shinj is told to pilot Unit-01, got me interested. It is such an intense emotional scene. I felt a connection with Shinji during that scene and well.... I think you can guess the rest.

What makes EVA so special?
What makes Eva so special... Is... When I watch it I get this warm feeling inside...
...Oh wait... No... That was me crapping my pants... :goof:
* What has EVA that other Animes don't have?
Everything... I think what makes me like Eva more than any other anime I've seen... Is the way the characters are very realistic... The way I can relate to just about all of them in one way or another...
And another question, which scene/part/aspect of the series hooked you to the series?
Well... After seeing the first two episodes, when my brother asked, "Do you want to stop?" And I shook my head and told him to keep playing the DVD... ...What does that tell you? I think I was hooked on the first episode... Right when Unit-01 broke out of the arm restraint...

Ewwww no! You sicko!!! hah!
I was meaning more like... Some of the stuff that happens in Eva can get you sitting on the edge of your seat... And ... Sometimes when people become 'excitied' ... The phrase "Crap in my pants' comes up... ...Makes sense to me. ^^

You betcha... ;) ...Hah... (Kidding, really.)
Anywho... Eva is so special, as I previously said, because I can relate to the characters, as I imagine just about anyone can, in one way or another.
The art is freakin great too! :liplick: And Kaji is HOT! :heh:
Eva reminds us of our own mortality and vulnerability to an extent.
The beautiful characters are essentially what hooked me. I can relate deeply to Asuka.
It has serious character devlopment which most anime's don't have.
I probably liked it more than a veteran anime watcher, as nothing seemed really cliche or unoriginal to me, eventhough now I know which things are gimicks, but I still like it. It's just so great how one ep builds upon the next (in some way!) and the next is usually better. Plus the whole thing about mass destruction, giant robots, ancient beings of unimaginable power trying to wipe out humanity, super secret organizations that control the world, and the end of all life... kinda hard not to be interested

Asuka and Rei hooked me on evangelion- I used to go to a video store that also sold and rented anime, and they had a wall scroll of rei and asuka, standing side by side in their plugsuits - full body shots. I still think they have to be two of the coolest looking characters/outfits ever. When I actually watched the anime, I got engrossed with the setting for nerv and shinji synching with unit 01 and then fighting the angel- plus the scenes between him and Misato in the car... LOL. I didn't like it again till episode 4 or 5, whichever one has rei and unit 00 in it (sorry don't remember which number it is).
well when i first saw EVA about 4-5yrs ago it was when i saw an ad for it on SBS and i was really hooked on the giant robots fighting angels and the mysterious story line. It was the first anime i had ever seen so i when when i saw the EVA's i was like WTF so i watched. i think the show really draws people in just of curiosity of what it is about.

The TV ad that first showed me eva sayed something like "The eastern animation that exploited the mystical doubt from western culture: Did God create man or man created God?"
Then of course, I wanted to watch, even though I was a little dissapointed when I found out that the slogan didn't had much to do with Eva after all...

All the development that comes out of it. How screwed up everyone is and/or the dark secrets that are held. It seems to get progressively darker thoughout the series. It's very good, and I can see why people say so.

A fan service scene? LoL!

You've got another thing coming if you think characters like Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Gendou are realistic... They occasionally act realistic, but the situations they go through and the way they are treated by other people are anything but. The minor characters like Hikari and Kensuke though I'd say nail down what you've said pretty well, although its obviously not what you meant.
What does Eva have that other animes don't have? Thats easy. An opportunity to redo the ending because the director/writer screwed up so bad the first time. Other than that, I can't really think of anything since Eva's hardly an original show in the first place...
I can tell you what got me hooked on Eva though since thats basically the way the thread has gone. The very first episode. Some people say Eva starts slow. Not me. I think it started off great (the 'slow' part comes later when Asuka shows up :P)

True they come under some pretty unrealistic situations but it's the way they handle those situations.

I didn't think the ending was that bad. Sure I would've liked to have seen more but hey, it was Anno's decision. Still waiting on EoE though

First and foremost I would have to say that the reputation surrounding NGE when I 1st came to AB was pretty big. "Wow everybody likethis one and it has 2 Forum! It must be good" That was about the 1st thing I said about nge when I arrived here.
Secondly: The character development is great in NGE.All of the characters seem so realistic and they all compliment each other and work well as a groupto make the show enjoyable. Plus is is very realistic (apart from all the robots and stuff) but that characterds are so relateable to real life.
And the last thing that drew me to NGE was Misato :D heh heh heh :o

I've been thinking about this a lot and I found put that NGE, is the only anime I've seen that leaves so much room for interpretation. I mean, why do you think we keep discussing every minimal detail of NGE? I bet the authors of it never thought with such an insightful eye as we do. And that is because many things were left unsolved, and those are the things one has to search by yours. That gives you a level of participation there. You have to make the story fit and it's up to you the ending's interpretation. It's one of the things (NGE I mean) that were done for interpretation rather than understanding.

Well, it was an unforseen benefit of the way the series was set up with practically no resolution whatsoever. Whether this is as good as many make it out to be is a whole other matter (I totally despise the fact that people find out most of their info about Eva from other fans rather than on their own through the anime and it is a HUGE flaw in the series IMHO), although it did end up helping Eva a lot because so much discussion was brought up because of that fact.
>>It's one of the things (NGE I mean) that were done for interpretation rather than understanding
Nope :p Up to this point you're right on though.

I didn't know it was possible to handle unrealistic situations realisticly......
And End Of Eva is much better than episodes 25-26, it improves the series alot in my eyes yet when I compare evangelion to another series I don't add EOE to ti because what other anime has had the chance to redo their stuffed up ending?
(I totally despise the fact that people find out most of their info about Eva from other fans rather than on their own through the anime and it is a HUGE flaw in the series IMHO),
How can someone's inability to think for themselves be the fault of the series itself?
I didn't know it was possible to handle unrealistic situations realisticly......
I think it's possible...like Marius said it's the way the charcters react to these situations. And it takes extremely well developed characters to make a seemigly unrealistc situation believeable. It's all about how well we relate to them. This is the basis upon which all good fantasy, sci-fi as well as genre defying works such as EVA , are based... and it is a huge part of what makes them work.

You misunderstood me. I said fans find out most of their facts from other fans, not most fans find their facts from other fans.
For me it's the characters and the way so much of Evangelion is open to interpretation that makes it special.
It's rather like some of the "cult" TV series from the past, in that if you ask 5 people who have watched it, and what they make of it you're likely to get 5 very differing opinions :)
Also the way that they have some rather nasty shocks/cliff hangers (i was desperately trying to get episode 19 i think it was, after the end of 18 where there was that fight...)
I personally got hooked watching episode 1 on a Fan sub just before christmas (i've now got the boxset).
I think it was the combination of the reluctant hero (anti-hero?), the strange Rei and the giant "robots" :)
I've now watched it about 8 times (3 times from the fansubs, and 5 times on DVD).

Yeah, but it's not such a bad thing if you need something to step on in order to create your own view of EVA. For example, after first watching Eva a couple of times and watching EOE I had a certain interpretation of it, the I started reading about it in web sites and got a new view of it(and it was pretty wrong indeed, cuz static info like on web pages isn't very accurate sometimes) and then I came here and got a new one too (basing it with some parts of older interpretations I made before). The thing about EVA is that much of the info is pretty hard to find and only a very limited number of fans can get it 'first hand'. What is the wrong thing with finding facts from other fans then, if Eva is so misterious by itself that watching it alone isn't enough? I think it's one of the best things it has. And think this is the point that makes us ask questions about it here almost everyday.

Because if you don't have internet access and are not able to visit the appropriate places, you leave Eva thinking Misato killed Kaji, you have no idea what really happened to Yui, you don't know that Rei was cloned from Yui, etc... -_-
And its not 'mysterious', its 'flawed'. There's a difference between leaving things hidden in there for people to investigate and find out on their own (which Eva should have done) and simply ignoring things (which is what Eva did) forcing them to go out and release Red Cross Books and the like.
I think it's one of the best things it has. And think this is the point that makes us ask questions about it here almost everyday.
Which is why I said it was an unforceen benefit :p :D
Something else I've found from re-watching the series is the way that technology advances during the series. That doesn't happen often in other series and even in television shows. They go from not knowing how the angels power themselves to finding the S2 engine and not being able to identify an angel until they see it to being able to identify it's blood pattern (blood type blue/orange etc).

I thought that eva was very special after episode 2, when it show's shinji's flashback of when his eva went berserk, I love that part....
also, the synchronized eva attack in episode 9 was very special to me for some reason, I absolutely loved it

Something I found out recently are the common use of scenes where there is no background music, but enviromental sounds, like like the speakers in the train station, or the radio, tv, the train sound, street sounds, etc. After rewatching many animes I found nobody uses this kind of things so often, but lean on background music most of the time.
Those damn cicadas get annoying sometimes though.
really? I find they add atmosphere

I agree. Those cicadas can be quite eerie...
in a way I actually find the ciccadas oddly relaxing, almost as relaxing as the "warning Eva Plug" paintings on the streets.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. A lot of animes use background music to add to a lot of there scenes, when it really isn't necessary. While a lot of the times, it's still pretty cool, Eva shows that you can make great scenes without it. Booyaka.
Also they use real companies like DHL :D
Oh come on, we all know what makes Eva so special, it has what every other series lacks but deseperately needs, the antics of everybody's fav character...
RITSUKO!!!!!!
Eva without Ritsuko is just pointless! Take her out and all the children will be like "where's Ritsuko, I want my mommmmy wahhhhhhhhhh" and "without Ristuko, I dont believe in nothin no more, I'm going to become a record exec!" Everybody loves Ritsuko, back me up here people ^_^

I like Ritsuko's wacky earrings.
damn right, poor Ritsuko get's no respect, especially after her hillarious mental breakdown, and her trying to kill Gendo...LOL Let's not forget the time that nobody came to her birthday party, so instead she took a big crap on Gendo's desk with a note that said "Eva unit POOP has arrived"...ookay I made that last one up but man would that be funny. Then a berzerk Eva-01 would smash in and eat the poop, Gendo would just begin to laugh and say "that's my Eva" hahahahaha
