Kaya calls Ashitaka using a term that can apply as an honorific to any elder man in her clan.

Originally, the Japanese VAs played them as brother/sister, and Miyazaki told them to act as if they were in love.

Miyazaki, in a 1997 interview (found on nausicaa.net) says: "I thought of Kaya as a girl who is determined to do so (marry Ashitaka"

For what it's worth, I call all the female family friends of my parents' generation "Auntie", and the males I call "Uncle". My younger cousins call me "ko ko" (Hokkien Chinese for "older brother"). And sometimes younger family friends call me that as well.

I understood that she was just an adoring little sister. I did read somewhere that the crystal dagger she gave him was supposed to be a symbol of undying love in their clan, but... either they meant the platonic kind or someone just threw it in cause it's pretty.

Anyway... no, I think she's just a sister. :heh:

yea but have you noticed what floats your boat is the same ---- that sinks it? anyway, if its in both jap and american translations i think it they were bro and sis, she even acted like a little sister that just cared for her bro (not in that way damnit!)

LMAO!!! :spit: I always thought they were brother and sister... I mean, that's what they say, so that's what I thought. I just figured she was gonna miss her big brother.. I mean, she's never gonna see him again, after all... Kaya looked kinda young to be marrying, anyway. But that's just me remembering her, because I haven't seen the movie in a couple of months. I gotta pull out that dvd... I miss it.. lol.

 Trust the adoring fans to create controversy even out of the most touching scenes...

Well, I thought it was touching! A little sister saying goodbye to her older brother who's leaving forever! And now that little sister wants to marry him?! :eek2:

:dodgy: Of course, as far as I could see, he was the only male child of her age around... Correct me if I'm wrong. It's been awhile since I watched the movie.

I was wondering about that situation myself. Thanks for clearing it up--I had figured they were just really close siblings. And I mean, what's wrong with that? :)

Yeah, when I watched it, I pretty sure she called ashitaka her bro!!! So if they're really siblings and she's ashitaka's fiance does that mean they're about to commit incest!! Yuck!!!
