I think I've heard about this somewhere before - I can't remember where or exactly what though.
... well, Australia is accursed in many ways from what I hear - ISPs'd be a nice example.

Several Fantasy-ish books borrow places from the real world - look at Tolkien, he borrowed an entire world and reshaped it a wee bit.

Tolkien didn't borrow a world, he specifically *used* the world. Middle-Earth IS Earth, just a LONG time ago, in an age nobody remembers.

I have the LOTR encyclopedia with 9 full world globe maps of the different ages of the world. The very last one ends up becoming Earth as we know it today.

As for Lodoss, it takes place on a planet called Forceria, and the only continents featured on it include Alecrast, Lodoss (which only exists because it broke away from Alecrast), and the joined continents (a la Europe and Asia) of Crystania and the one I always forget that starts with a D.

I was thinking that Middle Earth was based off a banana... Of course it is based off EARTH!

As for Austrila, I'm going to be linched for this, but didn't a war like that on Lodoss happen on the oringal? :D
