View Full Version : Wtf
Okay, can someone please tell me wtf LCL is and why the teens can talk underneath it in the EVAs. I haven't seen all of NgE yet, so dont tell me if it is revealed. (And also no spoilers please.)
it's not revealed directly IIRC, but if you have any brains you should be able to figure it out by the end.
What LCL is can be figured out pretty easily, and since you don't want any spoilers I won't really go into it. But if you've watched the series all the way through you should be able to figure it out.
As for why the children can talk in it...
It's just one of those things.

I guess that best sums up what everyone just said here. And since you don't any spoilers as to why the kids can talk while they're under liquid...you should know after watching the first episode and onwards as the story progresses about the evangelions, angels, references and so forth.

The pilots can talk in LCL because it's oxygenated. I believe that's explained early on in NGE.

It's imposible to talk in fluids no matter what. It's too dense for the vocal chords to vibrate.

But it's no ordinary fluid. Don't forget NGE is set in the near future, so they have better technology than they have now...who knows, by that time we could discover something that resembles it...

we already have something similar. the fluid from a mother's womb resembles the structure of LCL compound. don't ask me why, i heard it somewhere. (can what i said be a spoiler?)

ummm....not really
i think we can give a better explanation than that. i don't really think its much of a spoiler. also if u had been watching the show u would find out wot it is. LCL also known as Link Connect Liquid. It is a yellow liquid rich with oxygen that replaces normal air and directly enters the lungs and protects the pilot by absorbing the shock generated during battle with the Angels. It is close to the amniotic fluid produced by pregnant mothers to support unborn babies in the womb. It has also the smell of blood.

That was quite a nice definition there...

Has anyone seen the movie Abyss, well, the high pressure suits are real, and you have to breathe that red luquid. But since it's much more dense than air, voice like sound can't be generated, so you have to type in a keyboard or something. It doesn't matter how much oxygen it has, while it's fluid you can't talk. Unless its almost air-dense.
I think PEZ summed it up. Thats all I wanted to know. When I said I don't want spoliers, I was talking about the story in general and that if it had anything to do with the plot, then just dont tell me.
But it seems like it doesn't.
Of course I had an idea of what it was, some kind of shock absorbtion, but I was trying to figure out if it had other purposes.
I'm still kinda stuck on the vocal cord part. Water (water in general, not necessairly LCL) is 800 times denser than oxygen. My guess is that LCL has some kind of lower density in the 200 range or so, although this doesn't make sense, because if you went too low in numbers you would basically come up with evaporated liquid.
Isn't chemistry fun? ^_^

the obvious answer is that the show would be much less dramtic if the pilots couldnt talk.
however if you want some answer that resembles science I perhaps can think of one. Vocal chords can not vibrate the lcl enough to produce voices with in the range of human hearing. However, there still may be some vibration produced. Then it would be a matter of installing ultra sensitve microphones in the cokcpit which could detect those miniscule vibrations

They may vibrate a little, but forget about the phonetics you produce with your mouth and tongue. The soundwaves wouldn't be strong enough to be handled. And if something would come out of it, it will probably sound like these guys that had the throat operation and now have a hole on it, like the South Park Nam veteran.
i agree with Ataris that maybe it is really more dramatic with the pilots being unable to speak/communicate with anyone.
And also if u really wanted to speak you would have to be on the point of yelling for the human ear to even hear what u are trying to say.

I have heard that they can talk in LCL because of their A-10 NERVE. The signal is sent to Magi and then to Evas or Comm. Center.

Just thought of something, what if it did sound as though you were trying to talk in water, and the speakers that the pilots use to communicate somehow make the speach alot clearer?
yeh i jus a few episodes then and they seem to be able to easy speak like normal in lcl. u probably will never find out how it really works so jut enjoy it and don't worry about it.

Wouldn't this be more of a physics thing?
BTW, I think it is more for dramatic effect that they can talk, too.

Well...i think there is a reason why pilots can talk in LCL...and this is not only for DRAMATIC effect.

Yes, yours was really good, but, how can the A-10 reproduce the voice?

Oh yes… And it's perfectly pratical that this comes from the torso of… Oops, forgot this was a spoiler free thread… :heh:
But look at it this way… Is it exceptable for a human soul to be moved about as if it were an inatimate object? Or that half the things that happen in NGE can be considered true? I think not…
Just another fictional peice of anime… Nothing more…

Although on Evaotaku.com, in the "Red Cross Book" section, under LCL, says that "L.C.L." is not the ab. of Link Connected Liquid. Wierd huh.

Well...I think that signal from pilot is transfered to Magi. This signal contains different things like pilots brain waves and other. Speaking is also an action of a brain so it is quite easy for Magi to recive this signal and reproduce the voice of a pilot. There are many strange things that we saw.

Yes, but the voice tonality is phisically induced, so you can't think your voice exactly. But I think it's like Black Knight said, some unexplainable mistery of sci-fi.
